Oswego, NY - Final preparations are underway for Oswego Speedway’s Golden Anniversary Celebration on August 11 & 12, 2000. Formal invitations have been sent to all former Track Championship and International Classic winning drivers and owners. Among those drivers who will be attendance are Pat Abold, Ed Bellinger, Jr., Ed Bellinger, Sr., Johnny Benson, Chuck Ciprich, Warren Coniam, Kempton Dates, Greg Furlong, Steve Gioia, Jr., Joe Gosek, Jack Murphy, Mike Muldoon, Mike Ordway, Nolan Swift and Ronnie Wallace. Leona Shampine Barnett will also be in attendance.
A parade at 6:00 pm through downtown Oswego will kick off the Anniversary Weekend. All former and current supermodified, limited supermodified and super stock competitors are invited and encouraged to participate in this historic event. Among the highlights of the parade will be the fully-restored 8-ball wedge supermodified which Jimmy Shampine drove to Track Championships in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1976 and Classic wins in 1970 and 1974. The car is owned by Jim Paternoster of Oswego. Also, a fully-restored street-legal Shamrock 6 driven to the first International Classic win in 1957 by Irish Jack Murphy owned by Jim Henry of Hannibal.
Live music by the Swivel Rockers and a huge autograph area will highlight the pit party immediately following the parade. Past and present supermodifieds, limited supers and super stocks will also be on display, along with a WSEN Super Cruise Classic Car Show. Admission is free, however, there will be no coolers allowed into the pit area.
Then on Saturday night, August 12, a full schedule of supermodified, limited supermodified and super stock racing starts at 6:00 pm. Grandstand admission has been rolled back to August 10, 1951 prices - just $1.60 for adults, students and senior citizens, and 25¢ for Children 12 & Under. Both front and rear grandstands will be open. The night will be capped off by the Doug Danger Thrill Show, which will include a motorcycle jump, slide for life, wheelie show and wall of fire.
A special grandstand section has been reserved for all former drivers and owners and their guests. Drivers who would like to participate in the parade and autograph session should contact the Speedway at (315) 342-0646.
