Oswego Speedway 2002 Banquet report

Oswego Speedway honors Hall of Fame Inductees and 2002 Track Champions at Awards Banquet.

Oswego, NY - The Holiday Inn-Carrier Circle was once again the site of Oswego Speedway's annual Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Banquet. 2002 track champions Shawn Muldoon (supermodifieds), Mark Regan (limited supers) and Joe Miller (super stocks) were honored for their achievements this season and additionally six more men were inducted into the Oswego Hall of Fame for their past accomplishments.

The 5th annual Hall of Fame Inductees were composed of a group of famous and familiar names, not only to Oswego fans, but to many in the racing community in the U.S. and in Canada. The three drivers lauded this year were Steve Gioia Jr., Kempton Dates and Dick Jerrett Sr., while Marty Crucitti was inducted into the hall as a successful car owner, driver and also an employee who literally helped build the famous speedway. The late Sam Sessions received the honor for his achievements at Oswego, but also for his accomplishments in USAC and Indy cars throughout the United States. Howard Purdy, owner and builder of one of the most fabled supermodifieds in Oswego history ­ the Purdy Deuce ­ was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the owner category.

The top ten drivers in the supermodified division at Oswego received their trophies and/or plaques and checks, and they were in order: Shawn Muldoon, rookie and champion, 2. Howard Page, 3. Otto Sitterly, 4. Tim Gareau, 5. Tim Snyder, 6. Jeff Holbrook, 7. Dave Trytek, 8. Bob Goutermout, 9. Jamie Moore and tied for 9th, Keith Gilliam.

In the limited supermodified division, Oswegonian Mark Regan repeated his championship feat of the previous year. Second through tenth were in order, Mike Bond, Steve Austin, Billy Izyk, John Ketcham, Chris Proud, Gregg Davis, Tony White (also Rookie of the Year), Shawn Walker and Lou LeVea (another top ten finishing rookie).

The super stocks were led in 2002 by Joe Miller of Syracuse with his brother Kelly finishing two points behind him in second in the point standings. Third through tenth were Bill Moore, Doug Reaume, Dave Bock, Chris Lupa, Joe Skilinski, John Parkhurst, Rob Pullen and Eric Connors.

Representatives of Coca Cola ­ Powerade, Hoosier and MNR Fuels ­ Sunoco Race Fuels, were on hand as sponsors of the point funds to present the trophies.

The Eagles Fan Club also paid tribute to drivers in all divisions, but their point system is based on a different system with Shawn Muldoon still copping the first spot. Second through tenth were Tim Snyder, Howie Page, Otto Sitterly, Tim Gareau, Jeff Holbrook, Darcey Kerfien, Keith Gilliam, Bob Bond and Vern LaFave.

Mark Regan picked up the Eagles champion trophy in the limited supers and he was followed Steve Austin, John Ketcham, Shawn Walker, Lisa Laurent(car 1), Tony White, Gregg Davis, Chris Proud, Bill LeVea (car 96), and Jack Patrick.

The Eagles Fan Club honored longtime Eagles Fan Club member and program-seller at Oswego, Pete Trenca, for his dedication. Alcan Aluminum Inc. was recognized as a major contributor of $5,000 to the $29,000 Eagles point fund that was distributed at the banquet.

Serving as MC for the gala affair was announcer Roy Sova.
