Billy Drake of Bloomington, IL added to his recent list of prestigious wins by adding the "USA World 40" title to his collection Saturday night at Paducah International Raceway. The race was part of the year-long UMP "Super Series", as Drake added his name to the long list of winners throughout the years. Drake held off a terrific 26-car field from 6 different states in collecting the $5,000 top prize. Billy Moyer, Jr. of Batesville, AR, who recently picked up the largest bonus ($100,000) ever offered to a dirt late model driver, set fast time. Drake, Shannon Babb and Gary Keeling captured heat race wins, with Tim Brown winning the consolation event. As the green flew, Ponotoc, MS driver Steve Russell jumped to the front of the field. Fast-qualifier Moyer took an early exit with a broken panhard bar on lap 6. Drake then overtook Russell on lap 12, and was never headed, leading the remaining 38 laps. The win was Drakes' second in as many nights, pumping up his weekend earnings to $10,000. Russell slid high on the last lap, allowing Terry English of Benton,KY to sneak by for 2nd place. Russell finished 3rd, with Palestine, IL driver Doug McCammon and Kevin Claycomb of Vincennes, IN rounding out the top 5. Eddie Pace, Gary Keeling, Everett Bradham, Mike Munson, and Randy Sellars completed the top 10. In UMP Modified action, Jeff Cone led green-to-checker, with Jeff Parks, Steve Cole, and Stuart Beckham completing the top 5. Ralph Isom won the Street Stock feature, and Joey Mack won the Pro Stock feature. The Hav-A-Tampa late models return to the PIR oval this Thursday, July 29. The feature race will be 75 laps, with $10,000 going to the winner. The race is a make-up for the event, which was rained out June 19. Reserved seats are still available for the race, and all rain checks will be honored from the original date.
