Spring Run, PA_ The Legends Cars opened the show Saturday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park with a non-stop charge to the checkers as defending INEX national champion Allen Felix of Shippensburg came from fourth place to pass Ray Swank for the lead around a lapped car on lap 13.

The three Strictly Stock features that followed failed to follow the Legends ' lead. Tony Thurber of Orbisonia picked up his career first in the four-cylinders after starting seventh, and Jon Ehrhart of Chambersburg in his first race scored the second win for the #65 six-cylinder from a sixth place start. For the second consecutive race Dave Kitzmiller of Roxbury raced smart and won from the twelfth place handicap start in the V-8 class.

The no-budget entry level Strictly Stocks, formerly called junkyard cars, next race Sept. 13 and again Saturday, Sept. 20 at Path Valley. Rain makeups have been scheduled October 4 and Oct. 18. And since Path Valley is racing rain makeups from 28 season washouts every Friday in October, each of the Strictly Stock classes has been scheduled for a Friday night exhibition race in front of the big Friday night sprint and stock car fans.

The 4-cylinder strictly stocks will race Friday night, Oct. 10. The six-cylinders will race Friday night, Oct. 17, and the V-8 Strictly Stocks will race Friday night, Oct. 24. The PA 305 Sprints, at their request, will also race every Friday night in October. Gates open at 5 p.m. for both Friday and Saturday evening races at Path Valley.

Tony Thurber, the ticket taker at the Path Valley grandstand gate when he's not racing, drove the #97 Geo Storm for Chester Atherton and made third place on lap three. Then he waited and held his position behind Mark Campbell and past winner Denny Schofield until they let him past among lapped cars on lap nine.

On lap 13 he found a clear spot among the lapped cars and shot ahead to finish half the track ahead of Todd Heckman with 14 lapped cars behind him and a huge crowd of friends and fans cheering him on. The top five were Thurber, Heckman, Schofield, Jeff Treece and Campbell. Gary Koser, Treece and Heckman won the heats and Jeff Hale won the consi.

The Legends Cars feature was so evenly matched that Allen Felix only lapped two cars as he raced without pause to his third win of the season and second at Path Valley. He finished slightly more than a length ahead of Ray Swank as the two broke away from the field. The front five were Felix, Swank, Bryan Swartz, Denny Rothermel, and Lawrence Garrison and Garrison and Nathan Fisher won the heats. The Legends are scheduled three more times and finish their season Sept. 27.

Ehrhart used the lapped #7 of Mike Scott to pass early leader Danny Book's #98 on lap four and then he raced like a pro as Rob Keller of Fayetteville, the regular Path Valley announcer in #43, caught up on lap 14. At the dramatic finish Ehrhart won by about five feet with Keller's bumper even with the door on his #65 Chevy Caprice. The front five were Ehrhart, Keller, Dave Ricker, Jason Ege, and Health Book and the heat winners were Dave Ricker, Nick Ott, and Danny Book.

Derrick Hinish led the first half the V-8 feature and then fell off on lap 11 as Dave Kitzmiller negotiated past Joey Burdge. Past winner Dustin Brown and then Tony Verno challenged briefly but Kitzmiller said he "decided to stay behind some lapped cars and just finish the race," and cars he had already lapped kept him in the clear for the final five laps. The front five were Kitzmiller, Tony Verno, Joe Daywalt, Robert Naugle, and Tom Brady and the heats went to Luther Daywalt Sr. and Brown.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111.
