Spring Run, PA_ Four thrilling features, good fields of cars, and an enthusiastic grandstand crowd as the strictly stock junkyard cars finished their season at the Path Valley Speedway Park Saturday night.

The ten-lap mechanic's race that closed the regular season brought the crowd to their feet as Phil Best of Breezewood came from the rear and passed Duane Lapp on lap six. A legitimate mechanic, Best had raced himself as the "Keystone Rocket" in Ohio many years ago and then served on pit crews for such greats as Gerald Chamberlain and Charlie Cragan.

At least six women raced as mechanics in the special feature that combined four, six and eight cylinder cars in one race. Best won in the #00 of Dave Strait that earlier won a four-cylinder heat race.

Rick Rosenberry of Spring Run won his second feature in the six cylinders while rookie Todd Heckman of Chambersburg got his third win in the four-cylinder feature. Robert Naugle of South Mountain in #0 said "I love this kind of racing," after winning his first V-8 Strictly Stock feature.

The Strictly Stock class at Path Valley is made up of cars off the street with only modifications for safety permitted. The goal is to reestablish legitimate dirt track racing that youngsters and working people can afford.

The V-8 Strictly Stocks return to Path Valley next Friday night for a special exhibition race for the Friday night sprint and stock car crowd. That is the final auto race of the season at Path Valley.

The racing concludes the following night, Saturday, Oct. 25, with the Go Kart Season Finale. That is a rare chance for karts, which normally race Saturday afternoon, to enjoy nighttime racing on the softer clay surface that, with better traction, allows faster speeds.

Wrapping up the year will be the annual awards banquet Nov. 15 at the Pleasant Hall Firehall. A few tickets remain available at the track for the gala event with awards to karters before the banquet and to drivers after.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
