PLACERVILLE (8-15-98) - This Saturday night, championship auto racing will continue at Alan Padjen's Placerville Speedway as the Dirt Modifieds of the Northern California Dirt Modified Series make their sole season appearance at the El Dorado County Fairground track. This special visiting division will be accompanied by the regular Pro Stock and Pure Stock divisions as well as the visiting winged machines of the Sprint 100's Racing Association (SORA).

Saturday night will mark the first time that IMCA style dirt modifieds race on the Placerville quarter mile since 1995. It was that year that this division which is a hybrid between a stock car and an open wheel racer and also known as the "California Modifieds," was cancelled from the weekly race program at Placerville due to a consistently lacking car count.

The car count for Saturday's event, however, should be all but lacking in any way as 25-30 of the best Modified drivers from throughout Northern California converge here for the fourth round of a six race series.

In addition to Placerville Speedway, this newly founded competitive series competes at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Twin Cities Speedway in Marysville and High Desert Speedway in Susanville. The one contributing factor for this series entering Saturday's event is that Placerville is the only track on the 1998 campaign where these racers do not race on a regular basis, so the team who is the first to master the chassis set-up for the tight Placerville bull ring will clearly have an advantage.

Entering Saturday's much anticipated event, Marysville driver Randy McDaniel will lead the field. McDaniel, a former track champion of both Chico and Marysville tracks, currently leads the series point standings and is one of 42 different drivers who has competed and earned points in the '98 series. McDaniel leads a field of 11-drivers that have competed and earned points in all four series races so far.

Richard Brace Jr. of Grass Valley currently trails McDaniel in the point standings. Brace a former Placerville Speedway Rookie of the Year, trails the leader by 16-points. Chico driver Mike Compton rounds out the top three in the point standings and is followed by Chris Olexiewicz and Jim Beller.

In the Placerville Pro Stock division, Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova will lead the field. Moran, a five-time winner this season continues to lead the point standings with a15-point lead over Mike Chandler of Citrus Heights. Chandler closed in on the season-long point leader last Saturday night with his fourth season win. Mike Nuss of Pollock Pines ranks third in the ranks. Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado is fourth and Jeff Gavard of Placerville rounds out the top five.

In the Pro Stock division, Eric Hansard continues to lead the point standings. Hansard, who suffered a motor loss last season while attempting to score his sixth feature victory, leads the division point standings with a 36-point advantage over Placerville's Neil Webster. Webster stepped up to bridesmaid position in the point standings last Saturday by winning his second feature of the season. Bobby Bankson of Rancho Cordova ranks third overall in this division. Bill O'Neill of Fair Oaks holds the fourth position while Matt Keeler of Placerville rounds out the top five.

The Dirt Modifieds, Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks will be joined Saturday night by the travelling Sprint 100's. This division, which is best described as economy-minded four cylinder sprint cars, will be making it's sole season appearance. Current SORA point leader Gary Koster of Woodland will lead the field and will be joined by Rick Koster, Mike McNeff, Clyde Tipton, Max Neiman and many more.

The front gates of Placerville Speedway will open at 5 p.m. Saturday night with warm-ups beginning at 5:30. Adult tickets will be $9, juniors and seniors $6, children will be $3 and those under six will be admitted for free. For any further information on this event contact the office of John Padjen Motorsports at (916) 969-7484 or the speedway at (530) 626-3680.
