Budds Creek, Md., -- Fireworks were in the air and on the track to provide for an exciting night for the many fans who came out to see the show at Potomac Speedway this past Tuesday night, July 3rd.
The track hosted its sixth 40-lap I.T.S.I. Budweiser Super Late Model event. Defending I.T.S.I. Points Champion Allen Brannon of Winchester, Va., took home the $2,500 purse, picking up his first win of the season.
Paul Cursey of Baltimore, Md., visited victory lane for the fourth time this year in the Bell Motor Company Late Models. Sommey Lacey of Clements, Md., was the M.A.R.F. Hard Charger of the Race Award Winner. Lacey came from a 12th place starting position to finish second.
Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., unofficially picked up his third win of the season in the Coors Light Pure-Street Stocks. Greg Gunter of Berryville, Va., took the checkered flag in the Potomac Speedway Four-Cylinder feature on his first visit to the track this year. John Burch of Owings, Md., got his third win of the year in the Cliff's Heating and Air Conditioning Enduro/Hobby Stocks.
The evening of exciting racing action was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display by Fireworks Productions. The fireworks were sponsored by Arby's.
Bailey's Catering sponsored the boy's and girl's bike giveaways. Ten-year-old Emily Anne Cantrell of Newburg, Md., was the lucky girl's bike winner with 11-year-old BMX bike racer Bobby Daniel of Waldorf, Md., winning the boy's bike.
In the 40-lap Budweiser Super Late Model feature, it was the second night of racing in-a-row in which the dominant factor in the race was not the one who won. Jim Bernheisel started from the outside pole and was able to pass Tommy Wagner as they exited turn four, putting lap one in the books for the 30 car field. Bernheisel went on to lead the next 21 laps, holding off a challenge from Allen Brannon on lap 12. As the field entered turns one and two on lap 23, Bernheisel's car slowed, bringing out the caution flag. Brannon then assumed the lead. Brannon showed the way on the restart with James Adkins, Jr., in second. Adkins looked to the inside of Brannon on lap 27, but couldn't make the pass. He challenged again for the lead on lap 39, but Brannon held him off and went on to take the checkered flag. Adkins finished second, followed by Andy Anderson in third, Booper Bare in fourth, and Scott Cross in fifth. Bernheisel, Tommy Wagner, Jr., and Mike Christopher won the heats.
In the 20-lap Bell Motor Company Late Model feature, Ronnie Hollidge led the way as the green flag waved. On lap seven, Paul Cursey challenged for the lead, going to the inside of Hollidge as they exited turn two. Hollidge was able to hold him off. On lap eight, Cursey challenged for the lead again. The two battled side-by-side. Hollidge's car pushed up the track in turns three and four opening the door for Cursey. Cursey went to the inside, making the pass for the lead. Once Cursey took over the lead, he never looked back. He went on to take the checkered flag finishing with over a straight-a-way advantage over second-place finisher Sommey Lacey. Hollidge finished third followed by Johnny Smith in fourth, and Kevin Nelson in fifth. Hollidge won the heat.
Ronald Cusic started in the fourth-place position of the 15-lap Coors Light Pure-Street Stocks and worked his way up front to lead lap one. Cusic continued to lead as Jamie Lathroum and Tommy Hitt battled for second. Lathroum was able to take the position on lap four. Lathroum then set his sights on Cusic, staying glued to his rear bumper. Lathroum challenged for the lead in turn four, going to the inside of Cusic. They crossed the start-finish line side-by-side with Cusic leading the lap. The two continued to battle side-by-side with Lathroum making the pass for the lead in turns one and two on lap eight. A caution came out for Jeff Snavely on lap nine. On the restart, Cusic tried to retake the lead, going to the outside of Lathroum in turns one and two, but Lathroum was able to hold onto the position. Cusic made one last attempt to take the lead on lap 13. Lathroum went a little wide in turn four. Cusic went to the inside of him but Lathroum held him off. He went on to take the checkered flag. Cusic finished second followed by Jimmy Jesmer in third, Craig Tankersley in fourth, and Tommy Hitt in fifth. Lathroum and Corey Hanson won the heats. Pending the results of a post-race inspection, Lathroum in the unofficial winner.
Scotty Nelson led the way at the drop of the green flag in the 12-lap Potomac Speedway Four-Cylinder feature. By lap four, Nelson had about a straight-a-way advantage over the rest of the field. His lead was cut down on lap nine when a caution came out for an incident involving Linda Wright, Jerry Dick, and J.T. Mclanigan. While the field was under caution, Nelson pulled his car in the pits with a flat tire. Bob Tester, Jr., then assumed the lead and showed the way as the green flag waved. A caution came out on lap 10 for Sam Woods, Jr., and Butch Mclanigan. On the restart, Greg Gunter made a bid for the lead on the outside as they entered turn three. The two battled side-by-side for the next two laps. Gunter was able to take the lead in turn two on the last lap. He then went on to take the checkered flag. Tester finished second followed by Robert Holmes in third, Calvin Wright in fourth, and Chappy Knaack in fifth. Tester won the heat.
Bill Kessler started on the outside pole and led the way to complete lap one in the 15-lap Cliff's Heating and Air Conditioning Enduro/Hobby Stock feature. On lap four, John Burch challenged Kessler for the lead, but Kessler held him off. He challenged again on lap five and was able to make the pass as they exited turn four. Once Burch took over the lead, he never looked back. He went on to take the checkered flag, picking up his 27th career win. John Latham finished second followed by Wayne Suite in third. Brian Maxey who had finished in the fourth position was disqualified during post-race inspection giving fourth to Dave Bryant. Eric Hanson finished fifth. Joe Adams and Latham won the heats.
