Rain Holds Off for Hare to Visit Victory Lane Again at Potomac Speedway
By: Vicki Adkins

Budds Creek, Md., - July 14, 2000 - Once again, the rain held off for the racing action to take place at Potomac Speedway this past Friday night. While the storm lurked just outside the track's general vicinity, luckily, the rain didn't hit until all the racing action was completed. The only part of the track that received any damage was the clay racing service from the all of the exciting Coors Light, Bozick Distributing sponsored racing action. Les Hare of New Park, Pa., returned to victory lane for the fourth time this year in the Budweiser Late Models. Hare was followed by defending Budweiser Late Model Points Champion Jeff Pilkerton. Pilkerton had his best run all season, finishing a very strong second. During the post-race interview Hare said, "I knew Pilkerton was right there. I figured I better get on the ball." Paul Cursey of Baltimore, Md., racked up another win by taking the checkered flag in the Bell Motor Company Semi-Lates for the sixth time this year. The Coors Light Pure-Street Stocks had a double feature to make up for a rained out show on July 3rd. Walt Homberg of Accokeek, Md., won his first race of the season by taking the checkered flag in the first pure-street feature behind the wheel of Jeff Thomas' number 33. Tommy Hitt of Mechanicsville, Md., made his way to victory lane for the second time this year in the second pure-street feature. Wayne Graves of Avenue, Md., continues to dominate the Mac Tools Four-Cylinders by picking up his 5th win of the year. Ben Bowie of Welcome, Md., visited victory lane for the second time this year in the Gardiner Outdoor Products Enduros. Brian Maxey took the checkered flag for the second time this year in the Chesapeake Web Design Bombers. Stones Store and Coors Light Pure-Street driver P.J. Hatcher donated the child's bike for the children's bike giveaway. Ten-year-old Kevin Cooke, son of Doug and Kelly Cooke, both former drivers of Potomac Speedway and sponsors of the Mac Tools Four-Cylinders division, was the lucky bike winner In the 25-lap Budweiser Late Model feature, Pat Wood started on the outside pole and led the way as the green flag waved to complete lap one. On lap two, Wood got loose in turn two. Second-place runner Les Hare had to check-up causing a chain reaction behind him. Jack Bland, David Hoffman, and Jackie Booth were all involved. On the restart, Wood led the way. On lap three, Les Hare challenged for the lead. He went to the inside of Wood in turn two. He was able to make the pass for the lead on the backstretch. Once Hare took over the lead, he started to pull away from the rest of the field. By lap five, he had about a four-to-five car length advantage. His lead was then cut down as the yellow flag waved for Tommy Wagner, Jr., who spun in turn two. On the restart, Hare easily led the way. On lap 10, Jeff Pilkerton set his sights on the second place position. He went to the inside of Wood in turns one and two, making the pass for the second as they exited turn two. As Wood and Pilkerton battled for second, Hare was able to stretch out to about a half straight-a-way advantage. A caution then came out on lap 13 when Deane Guy and Bill Timme made contact in turns one and two causing Guy to spin. Hare led the way on the restart. As they entered turn four, Pilkerton looked to the inside of Hare, but couldn't make a move. Pilkerton stayed glued to Hare's rear bumper and then decided to make a bid for the top spot in turns three and four. Hare was able to hold him off. Pilkerton challenged for the lead again on lap 16, but Hare again held him off. A caution came out on lap 16 when Hoffman and Booth got together in turn two. On the restart, Hare led the way. Pilkerton pulled right back up on Hare's rear bumper on lap 19 and stayed there for the next few laps. On lap 23, Pilkerton almost spun in turn two. Hare was then able to pull ahead with about a half straight-a-way advantage. He went on to take the checkered flag, followed by Pilkerton in second, Allen Brannon in third, Pat Wood in fourth, and Tommy Wagner, Jr., in fifth. Hare and Wagner, Jr. won the heats. Ronnie Hollidge started on the pole and showed the way as soon as the green flag waved in the 20-lap Bell Motor Company Semi-Late feature. Paul Cursey looked to the outside of Hollidge on the backstretch and then made his move in turns three and four. Hollidge was able to hold him off to lead lap one. Cursey challenged for the lead again on lap two, going to the inside of Hollidge in turns three and four. Hollidge again held him off. A caution came out on lap four when Darryl Hills slowed in turns three and four. On the restart, Hollidge easily led the way. Cursey continued to pursue the top spot, going to the inside of Hollidge on laps five and six. He went to the inside of Hollidge as they exited turn two, making the pass for the lead on the backstretch. Hollidge came battling back in turns three and four, but Cursey held onto the lead. As Cursey led, a battle developed for the second and third place positions as Hollidge, Sommey Lacey, Junior Lathroum made it almost three-wide. Lathroum was able to grab second as Lacey took third. Cursey was able to pull ahead by about a five-to-six car length advantage as the battling for position continued behind him. He went on to take the checkered flag, unchallenged for the lead and finishing with about a half straight-a-way advantage over Lathroum. Lacey finished third, followed by Hollidge in fourth, and Ray Hackett in fifth. Hollidge won the heat. Deano Painter started on the pole and led the way in the make-up feature for the Coors Light Pure-Street Stocks. Painter showed the way for the field of 18 cars to complete the first 10 laps. On lap 11, Walt Homberg was able to take the top spot from Painter. He went on to lead the last five laps to take the checkered flag. Bobby Tipton, Jr., finished second, followed by Jamie Lathroum in third. Painter fell back to fourth, followed by Johnny Smith in fifth. In the second 15-lap Coors Light Pure-Street Stock feature, Jamie Lathroum and Bill Tippett made up the front starting row. Lathroum led the way at the start of the race. Before the first lap was completed, a caution came out for an incident involving two cars in turns one and two. The field had a complete restart. As the green flag waved, Lathroum led the way with Walt Homberg in second. Tommy Hitt passed Homberg on lap two, followed by Tippett and Deano Painter on lap three. Hitt then set his sights on Lathroum, pulling right up on his rear bumper. On lap five, Hitt made a bid for the lead, going to the inside of Lathroum on the backstretch. He made the pass for the lead as they entered turn three. Hitt and Lathroum made contact in turn four causing Lathroum to lose his front nose. A caution came out on lap six for debris on the track. On the restart, Hitt led the way. Tippett challenged Lathroum for second. Painter also joined in the fight, making it a three-way battle. On lap seven, Lathroum spun in turn two, bringing out a caution. Hitt continued to show the way and went on to take the checkered flag, unchallenged for the lead. Tippett and Painter continued to battle for second, with Painter winning the battle on lap 11. Tippett finished third, followed by Tom Turner in fourth, and Tim Shelton in fifth. Turner and Johnny Smith won the heats. Wayne Graves and Bob Tester, Jr., battled for the lead at the start of the 12-lap Mac Tools Four-Cylinder feature. Tester grabbed the top position as they entered turn three. On lap three, Tester's car drifted up the track in turns three and four. Graves dove to the inside of him. The two crossed the start-finish line side-by-side with Graves leading the lap by inches. Tester came battling back on the backstretch, but Graves held him off. Graves then began pulling away from the rest of the field. He had about a four-to-five car length lead by lap six. A caution came out on lap nine when Sam Woods spun after contact with Scotty Nelson. Nelson was sent to the rear of the field for the incident. On the restart, Graves led the way. As they entered turns three and four, Graves went wide. Tester dove to the inside of him, retaking the lead. Graves came battling back on lap 10 and was able to pass Tester for the lead again. Calvin Wright then challenged Tester for second. The two ran side-by-side for the last two laps. As they came across the start-finish line to take the checkered flag, Wright edged Tester at the line by inches to finish second. Tester finished third, followed by Jerry Dick in fourth, and Pop Woods in fifth. Linda Wright won the heat. In the 20-lap Gardiner Outdoor Product Enduro feature, Wayne Suite and Paul Schendel made up the front starting row. As the green flag waved, Schendel led the way to complete lap one. Suite looked to the inside of Schendel on the backstretch on lap three, but couldn't make a move. Suite was able to challenge for the lead on the inside groove as they exited turn two, but Schendel held him off. On lap six, Suite got loose in turn two. Third-place runner Josh Moxley had to check up causing a chain reaction behind him. John Burch and Ben Bowie were caught up in the incident, but all were able to keep going. Bowie actually ended up moving into third. On lap eight, Bowie set his sights on Suite and made the pass for second. On lap nine, as Schendel entered turn four, his car drifted up the track. Bowie dove to the inside of him, making the pass for the lead. He then started pulling away from the rest of the field. By lap 12, he had about a four-to-five car length lead. He went on to take the checkered flag, unchallenged for the lead. The best battle on the track was for the second position. Suite challenged Schendel for second on lap 14 and was able to take over the position on lap 15. Then on lap 18, Joe Adams had made his way into third and tried to take second from Suite. The two battled side-by-side for several laps. Suite was able to hold onto the second-place position. Adams finished third, followed by Kevin Sprague in fourth, and John Ballou in fifth. Suite won the heat. Brian Maxey led the way as the green flag waved in the 15-lap Chesapeake Web Design Bomber feature. By the time he completed lap one, he already had about a five-to-six car length lead. He stretched that lead out to about a straight-a-way advantage by lap three. Maxey went on to take the checkered flag, unchallenged for the lead, finishing with over a half-track advantage over the rest of the field. A good battle for second developed between Donald Doss and Chris Carrico. Carrico passed Doss on lap 11 for second, but then almost spun on lap 13. Doss repassed Carrico to finish second. Carrico finished third, followed by Jerry Oliver in fourth, and Ronnie Doss in fifth.
