Northern California Modified Association made their first of two trips to Reno-Fernley Raceway. This 3/8 mile clay oval continues to improve on each visit NCMA makes there. The program of five classes of open wheel racing began with two heats of six sprinters being run. Heat 1 had Ed Amador and Bert Siverling come in first and second and Heat 2 had Scott Holloway and David Kinnard come in first and second. Of note, Sam Fries in heat 2 who spun out of third place, and was able to start in the rear and regain third in a few short laps.
The top two racers from those heats made the Trophy Dash. Ed Amador, on the pole, Scott Holloway, Bert Siverling and David Kinnard. In four quick laps, S. Holloway came in first, E. Amador second, Siverling third and Kinnard fourth.
The main event which was run on Father's Day (12am, June 16) Had dad Leon Holloway on the pole, George Terry on the outside, Sam Fries, third, Bill Felver in fourth, and David Kinnard in fifth. Holloway's son, Scott Holloway started seventh. L. Holloway spun out heading over the rim on lap one, and a total restart had Sam Fries taking the green. He held the lead until lap 12, when Scott Holloway got around him and took first position. This continued until lap 16, when rookie Darren Thomas, driving for owner George Terry, spun in turn one. At the same time, Russ Wullenwaber ran over Scott Holloway's left side with his right side tires. After this "Big Foot"move, Holloway continued until the race was complete. Before the green was thrown on lap 17, David Kinnard and Gordon Chappa, in for the vacationing Jim Janssen, left the track with mechanical problems.
