Son Davidson bests father in Romco Superspeedway debut.

FORT WORTH-DALLAS (June 8, 2002) - The Davidson late model racing family dominated the ROMCO Super Late Model Series superspeedway debut Saturday afternoon at Texas Motor Speedway. For a while it appeared that father knew best, but when the checkered flag fell it was son Chris that displayed the move of the day

The Davidsons ruled the 50-lap, 75-mile dash around the 1.5-mile high-banked superspeedway. Greg set the pace for the opening 29 circuits before a wise restart maneuver put Chris ahead, riding high into the lead in turn two. The younger Davidson led his elder to the finish line, the team Westside Performance Monte Carlos just 0.62 seconds apart. Chris collected $3,600 for his first ROMCO Super Late Model Series victory of 2002, Greg left the property $2,000 richer.

The event proved competitive throughout the field with just two yellow flags slowing the pace. Nobody was injured in the incidents. Series officials required the use of a three-quarter inch carburetor restrictor plate, which kept top speeds in the 150-mph range. The lead pack consisted of three and four cars throughout the race.

"Winning this event is something I can't believe," said Chris in victory lane. "I'm sure it will sink in later.

"I waited until the (lap 30) restart as I thought that would be the best time to make a move," continued the victor. "It's great being here at Texas Motor Speedway - it's an incredible facility."

Tennessee invader Gary Helton of Sayerville claimed third place. Helton stayed in the top four all day aboard the borrowed Volunteer Performance Engines All Pro Monte Carlo. Fred Schultz of Houston took fourth in the Line-X Chevrolet while Michael Crofford, also of Houston, rounded out the top five in the Cole & Cole Monte Carlo.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series leader David Starr of Irving recovered from being a lap down to finish seventh in the Pit Solutions Monte Carlo. Starr and then third-place T. Wade Welch collided on the frontstretch on lap 29 which resulted in Welch sliding wildly through the infield grass. Welch lost his hood in the incident, which forced him out of the running.

Chris Davidson won the pole position earlier in the day with a lap of 150.661 mph, topping Greg Davidson's 150.493 mph. A total of 28 cars took the race's green flag with 30 machines participating in the weekend.

The ROMCO Super Late Model Series moves to Corpus Christi Speedway's banked quarter-mile paved oval Saturday night, June 22.
