SERIES: DIRT, SAS SLM

ESTABOGA. AL - RIS - The Southern All Star Super Late Model Series made its annual stop at the 1/3 mile Talladega Short Track on Saturday night for a 50 lap, $3,000-to-win event. There were plenty of fans who braved the cold winds and the intermittent drizzle during the evening to watch one of the best SAS Super Late Model events in years at the Talladega Short Track.

1995 Southern All Star Super Late Model Champion Marshall Green was able to edge out 1995 Talladega Short Track Champion Danny Peoples by less than two feet to take the win.

43 Super Late Models checked into the track and Greg Skimmer was the fastest of them all as he nabbed the SUNOCO Race Fuels Pole Award with a clocking of 15.52 seconds. Second fastest was local driver Stacy Holmes who had his best ever qualifying effort on the Southern All Star tour. Venerable Red Farmer set the third fastest time and Marshall Green was fourth fastest. Green feat was even more remarkable when you realize that he was in Little Rock, AR to compete in the Hav-A-Tampa event that was postponed by rain, and then drove to Estaboga, arriving just before Time Trials commenced.

When the green flag fell it was Skinner who took the point ahead of Holmes, Green, Farmer and Peoples. It did not take long before Green was able to work his way under Holmes and take over second and on the next lap, Farmer slid below Holmes to move into third. Green was closing in on Skinner when the first caution of the race came out as Jeff Walker, Terry Smith and Roger Best all tangled in turn three.

On the restart Green got under Skinner and the two battled side-by-side down the front stretch, and it was not until the cars were on the back straight that Green was able to edge ahead and take the lead. The leaders soon began encountering lapped traffic, and Green handled the slower cars masterfully and Skinner was unable to close the gap.

As the race reached the Halfway point it was Green still in front followed by Peoples now having moved into second, 1996 SAS Champion Mark Miner was third, Rodney Dickson was fourth and Skinner had slid back to fifth. Farmer was running in sixth followed by Ross Martin, Mike Head, Dean Garland and Bo Shirley as the crossed flags came out.

Green continued to dominate the race until Skip Freeman lost his motor resulting in the second caution period on lap 36, and allowing Peoples to close up on Green's bumper.

For the last 14 laps Green was constantly under pressure from Peoples, but he was up to the task as the two cars worked their way through lapped cars. When the white flag flew, Green had a lead of one car length over Peoples, but as he entered turn one he ducked in a little too far and got crossed up. This allowed Peoples to emerge from turn two neck and neck with Green and the two roared down the back straight side-by-side with Green on the outside. As they headed into turn three, Green kept Peoples down on the inside, and tried to use a lapped car as a pick, but it did not slow Peoples long and as the cars exited turn four it was anybody's guess as to who had the lead. The cars flashed across the finish line, and officials had to resort to a photo to determine that indeed it was Green who had taken the win by a scant two feet. The victory was Green's first of the season on the SAS tour. Mark Miner filled the top three as he took third, Rodney Dickson was fourth, a career best, and Greg Skinner held on to fill out the top five. Red Farmer took home sixth, followed by James Cline, Dean Garland, Ross Martin and Mike Head.

The nest Southern All Star Super Late Model event will be May 3rd at North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, GA for a 50 lap, $3,000-to-win event.
