Sauter wins TOledo

TOLEDO, OH. (July 30, 2000) -- Defending ASA ACDelco Series National Champion Tim Sauter made a pass on current National Championship points leader Gary St. Amant with just 21 laps remaining to take his third win of the season in Sunday's Glass City 300 presented by Jani-King at Toledo (OH) Speedway. Sauter survived the flu and a weekend full of rain to climb back into the points hunt after a disappointing race last week at Salem (IN) Speedway.

The event was delayed for an hour by an on-again-off-again mist which hampered the entire race weekend. The event was started on 2000 owner's points with track problems due to rain canceling qualifying on Saturday.

"Even though it rained all weekend, I came in here and really wanted to run hard," said the Necedah, Wis. native. "The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was really strong coming off the corners, which was the key to winning today."

Sauter had a dominating car throughout the race, picking up his sixth career win. After making the pass for the lead late in the event, Sauter came to the checkers 0.836 seconds ahead of St. Amant. Sauter, who led a total of 182 laps, moved into third pl ace in the points, ahead of Mike Miller, who crashed late in the event.

Pole-sitter St. Amant stayed with the leaders all day and used an very fast late race pit stop to catapult him into the second finishing position. With the podium finish, his seventh in the 11 races, St. Amant holds onto the points lead by 195 over Kevin Cywinski.

Cywinski, who led many of the early laps, finished third after a late pass on Mike Eddy. Cywinski was closing on the leaders, but lapped traffic didn't allow him to close the gap in the final laps. Glenn Allen Jr. and Butch Miller came home fourth and fif th respectively.

Sauter collected $17,700 of the $194,800 purse. Eleven cautions slowed the race for 83 laps, including one in the middle of the race when Dave Sensiba collided with the inside tire barriers, moving them out of place. Six drivers swapped the lead on 10 occ asions.

The ASA ACDelco Series moves to the Jennerstown (PA) Speedway next week, August 6, for the Pennsylvania 300. The event is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (Eastern) start on Sunday and will be telecast telecast LIVE on TNN Sports.
