Mechanicsburg, Pa - August 14, 2004 - Rick Barr captured his first career Sportsman feature win on Saturday night at Silver Spring Speedway and Paul Morgan ran a smooth race to capture the 10th Annual Street Stock 40 sponsored by JTM Tire and Alignment of Harrisburg..
Bill Heckert started on the pole for the 25-lap Sportsman feature but Rick Barr launched off the outside to take the lead on lap one in his Rustic Tavern/Barr's Carpet Cleaning 55. The yellow flew first for a tangle between JR Fry and Jim Shuttlesworth in turn two and then for a Dave Ort spin in turn one.
Barr stayed on top with the veteran Heckert holding second until lap 4 when Mark Zimmerman moved into second from his third starting spot. Barr held a comfortable lead as they ran caution free for several laps. Zimmerman was slowly closing in and appeared to be ready to challenge Barr when the yellow flew with 14 laps complete.
On the restart Barr got a great start and quickly opened up a comfortable margin over Zimmerman. Paul Troutman, who ran third from lap five, lost that spot on lap 17 to Ken Carberry, who started 12th.
The yellow never reappeared and Rick Barr drove like a veteran to go on to take his first career win without a serious late race challenge. Mark Zimmerman finished second trailed at the finish by Ken Carberry, Frankie Herr, Paul Miller, Smokey Snellbaker, Paul Troutman, Jason Fry, Craig Morrow, and Rich Eichelberger
Smokey Snellbaker, who started 21st and finished 6th, earned the hard charger award. Bill Schoffstall, Mark Zimmerman, Ken Carberry, Paul Troutman and Jason Fry were the 10-lap heat winners while Snellbaker won the 12-lap B-Main and Gregg Foster won the C-Main.
Joe Krick started on the pole for the Street Stock 40 and took the early lead with Paul Morgan, a close second. The top two ran nose to tail through three yellows and 10 laps until Morgan made an inside move in turns one and two to move in front. Once in front Morgan never looked back. Roger Leaman and Todd Bowersox battled for third just ahead of Kory and Kirby Sites. Krick started to fade and fast timer Kory Sites developed problems on lap 26. At this point Leaman was second.
Defending 40 winner, Stan Wanner, who started eleventh, made his move now to fifth on lap 29 but it was too late. On lap 36 Bowersox surged forward and took second on lap 36. Bowersox had his mind on nothing but the win as he drew beside Morgan on lap 39 with a bold outside move. He settled back into second at they took the white flag and came back to make that same move again in turn three. This time Bowersox caught the outside wall and dropped to a fourth place finish.
Paul Morgan took his second win of the season over Stan Wanner, Kirby Sites, Todd Bowersox, Roger Leaman, Joe Krick, Bobby Hockenberry, Joe Whitely, Rodney Clouser, and Wes Alleman, Kory Sites set a new track record in time trials for the street stocks, setting a fast time of 19.433. Consolation winners were Randy Patterson and Marc Berzowski.
