Opening Night of Dirt Cup 2005

Peter Murphy led all 30 laps in winning the opening night of the 2005 Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup. Starting on the pole, Murphy outgunned Josh Edson on the initial green flag to take the early lead. Edson went flipping down the front stretch to bring out the first caution on the second lap ending his night.

On the restart, Jason Statler tagged the turn two wall, bunching up Brent Kaeding, Steve Kent, Roger Crocket and Jonathan Allard sending them to the back of the pack after repairs on the red flag.

The race went green for the next 15 laps with Murphy leading Barry Martinez, Danny Bullock and Brock Lemley expertly through traffic. Steve Kent spun in turn 3 bringing out the final yellow on lap 18.

Murphy led the final 12 go-rounds as well with Martinez, Kyle Johnson, Travis Jacobson and Marc Huson rounding out an all Northwest top 5. Jonathon Allard was the top finishing visitor in 9th. Immediately after the race ended the rains came.

The B Main event was won by Travis Rutz, who used his transfer spot to finish 7th in the A Main. The C Main winner was Dan Pierson who patiently stalked Gary Vaughn and slipped by on the 13th lap for the win.

Heat race winners were Murphy, Crockett, Martinez and Ricky Fauver.

In qualifying Jonathan Allard paced the field of 47 Sprint Cars with a 11.553 lap as almost the last car in time trials, to nip Toni Lutar's 11.557, P.J. Chesson's 11.576, and Danny Bullock's 11.595 to lead the top four cars in the 11.5's.

The top 6 points leaders for the night were Kyle Johnson 553, Marc Huson 544, Travis Rutz 539, Jonathan Allard 536, Rick Fauver 534 and Brock Lemley at 533.

The second night of racing begins with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 7:30 at Skagit Speedway.
