SOUTH BOSTON, VA (OCT. 6, 2002)--Augie Saccoccio and Jesse "Doodle" Lang joined Frank Deiny and Bill Moshenek as South Boston's 2002 track champions. Saccoccio gained his second straight Pure Stock 4's title by 34 points over rookie Bruce Anderson. Lang won the Super Stocks crown by a mere six points over Bennie Franklin, who eclipsed Troy Dowdy for second in the final points.

The day began with the first of two Pure Stock 4's 20-lap races. Bruce Anderson captured the pole, breaking the previous track record set by Donald Glass in April. The top two contenders for the Pure Stock 4's championship, Anderson and Augie Saccoccio, battled early in the race, but newcomer Brent Ferrell launched himself from the fourth starting position and into the lead. Ferrell held the lead until the finish, and was followed to the line by Saccoccio and Rodney Pennington.

Troy Dowdy started his bid for the 2002 Super Stock championship well by sweeping both poles for the Super Stock twin 30s. Dowdy's day soured early, as Terri Williams overtook the lead a third of the way through the race. On lap 20, Dowdy hit the turn two wall hard, causing extensive damage to his Pontiac. Luck was on Williams' side, as she held off Bennie Franklin and Billy Goble for the win.

The day's drama really kicked into high gear with the second Pure Stock 4's match. Brent Ferrell started on the pole and never relinquished the lead. Lee Anderson was chasing Ferrell down in second, but found the wall early on. On the restart, Bruce Anderson received a stop-and-go penalty, which shuffled him to the rear. Anderson eventually rebounded to the 10th position. Augie Saccoccio's Nissan had mechanical trouble, causing him to lose a lap and finish 14th, but still clinch the championship. Rodney Pennington finished second in the race, with John Goss in third.

In the Super Stock season-closer, it was again the Terri Williams show, as she led flag to flag in another drama-packed race. Midway through the race, 2001 Super Stock champion Billy Goble hit the inside retaining wall hard, eliminating him from competition. He expressed his displeasure at a passing Jack Milam by throwing his helmet at the No. 75. A jubilant Williams pumped her fist in the air as she crossed the start/finish line for the final time, and was followed to the finish by Bennie Franklin and Tommy Peregoy.

The East Coast Ford Flathead Association made the second of a pair of visits to South Boston, and like their first showing, Tim Brown finished in victory lane. Bill Blair was second, and James Rogers rounded the top three.

South Boston Enduro fans know Mike Ganoe is tough to beat, and he showed his skill early in the day-capping Enduro by leading much of the early stages of the race. Midway through, Ganoe spun in turns three and four, handing the lead to Richard German. German and Thomas Thompson swapped the lead throughout the second half of the race, with Thompson leading on lap 199. German posted a last-lap charge and walked away with the victory.

As South Boston's 45th season of racing draws to a close, there are still two events remaining on the schedule. Next on the calendar is the Oct. 19 USAC Mini Indy Midget 200, including races from the USAC Midgets, Scale Racing League mini Cup cars and trucks and the Lehigh Valley Quarter Midgets. The evening will also feature a star-studded pre race autograph session including Winston Cup championship points leader Tony Stewart, 2002 South Boston ARCA race winner Ken Schrader, Hermie Sadler, Morgan Shepherd and legendary car owner Junie Donlavey. The season concludes with the Nov. 9 Bailey's 300 Hometown Challenge Late Model Stock Invitational. With a $15,000 winner's check, the race is sure to draw the best of the best from the region's Late Model ranks.
