South Boston Bailey's 300 is battle of best

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. (OCT. 22, 2002)-If the 2002 Late Model Stock season at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway is any indication, then the Nov. 9 Bailey's 300 Hometown Challenge will be a showstopper.

South Boston regulars spoke often of the toughness of their competitors throughout the season. The championship points chase went down to the wire and was won by a mere 16 points. South Boston's 2002 winner's list only had a few drivers, but there were numerous that came dangerously close. Drivers from around the region paid a visit to South Boston during the season to see what they could do with the South Boston field. Some of these drivers even decided to stick around for the entire season. One of these drivers walked away with the championship.

It's for this reason drivers from all along the East Coast will gather at South Boston Nov. 9 to take part in the Bailey's 300. After all, it's been said that if you can win at South Boston, you can win anywhere. A $15,000 winner's purse and national television exposure doesn't hurt either. The Bailey's 300 will be nationally televised on the Speed Channel, and is scheduled to air 2 p.m., Nov. 23 and 5 p.m., Nov. 25.

Already a bulk of South Boston's top drivers has entered the Bailey's 300 field, including Owen Miller, Eddie Johnson, Scott Worley and Jason Dickerson. Also entered is South Boston's most recent Late Model winner Dean Ward, fresh off a fifth-place finish at the Martinsville Speedway in the Sept. 29 Taco Bell 300.

Gates for this year's edition of the Bailey's 300 open at 9 a.m., just in time for 10 a.m. qualifying. The Mike's Hard Lemonade, 3M and Just Born Heat races begin at noon, with the last chance race scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Green flag for the Bailey's 300 falls at 2 p.m. Reserved seats are $30 in advance or $35 at the gate. General admission tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. Youth age 10 to 15 are $10, and children nine and under are free.
