53 Cars - 300 Laps, Hubbard Opens 2002 On A Winning Note

Rochester, Wa (January 1, 2002) - Praying for the rain to go away on Tuesday didn’t help. It came and poured during the annual“ Snowflake 300” Enduro on New Year’s Day. The rain didn’t keep drivers or fans away. Fifty-three cars started the races with hundreds of fans cheering them on.

Ralph Puncochar made the crowd scream with glee as he ran his car head first into a tire and flew up on the back stretch wall, practicing his parking, but he was fine and finished 42nd. His sons, Brian and Scott fared better, finishing 35th and 14th respectively. Mike Mikelson and Jerry Pinch battled for much of the early laps until Mikelson pulled off with mechanical problems. After leading about 50 laps, Pinch pulled off with a flat losing only one lap and finishing the race third. Mark Hubbard was the big winner with his dad Rick right behind him in second.

The Hubbard's were the only cars to finish on the lead lap. Jeff Brookshire finished 3 laps down in fourth. Too close to call at the line, Ray Bader and Dan Walker tied for fifth. Dale Holland, a newcomer, finished in 7th. Steve Kastl came across the mountains and finished 8th after taking a year off. Tim Gosch finished 9th with his brother Jon in 20th. Robert Shankles, after also taking a year off, rounded out the top 10, down only 9 laps.
