FORT WORTH-DALLAS (August 20, 1998) - Fans filled the stands at Texas Motor Speedway for the final Thursday Night Stampede of the 1998 summer season -- and they weren't disappointed in the racing action.

In the weekly Legends Cars Radio Race, it was talk show host Mark Davis of WBAP taking on KSCS morning man Terry Dorsey. It was fitting that Davis took the checkered flag and bragging rights on WBAP night. As a result, Dorsey will have to share the airwaves with his on-track rival. Davis will take charge of the morning show hosted by Dorsey and Hawkeye one day next week.

"His ploy of spinning out over and over almost worked," said Davis. "I was almost unnerved by the constant stopping and starting! I don't know which I'm more proud of; the fact that I won or that I'm the only WBAP driver not to spin out or have the car catch fire!"

The win by Davis brings the final tally to six wins for KSCS and four for WBAP -- making KSCS this summer's Thursday Night Stampede Radio Champions.

The second celebrity feature was the battle of two Ft. Worth Racefest directors -- Buzz Brightbill, the outgoing director, and Roger Williams, the new director. Brightbill, a senior vice president with Bank One, won without incident. Of course, he did have the upper hand going into the match-up -- his opponent, who owns a car dealership, ironically had never driven a stickshift before.

"Hey, I finished second out of all those cars," joked Williams. "Not too bad!"

Thursday Night Stampede championships were dominated by Austin-area drivers. Eddy Wallace, Round Rock, captured his second straight Stampede crown in the Legends Pro Division while racing dentist David Nelson, Austin, claimed his inaugural Masters title. Thirteen-year-old Casey Smith, Austin, snared the Semi Pro Division crown. The Bandolero's first-season championship was won by Josh Gilbert, Grapevine, with his sixth feature victory.

Nelson won his fifth Masters 20-lap feature of the year while Wallace topped his third Pro headliner. Gary Glanger, Dallas, took his first Semi Pro main as Trevor Seeley, Dallas, earned his initial Charger victory. The next Legends race at TMS will be Sept. 20 during the Lone Star 500.
