UNION, Ky. (Saturday) Jack Boggs, taking the point on the 31st lap when a fuel leak forced Rick Aukland to the pits, lead the final 19 laps for a $5,000 victory in the Spring 50 at Florence Speedway, his first big-purse win of 1997.

Boggs finished about half a straightaway ahead of John Gill, who finished second at the 3/8-mile oval in northern Kentucky. Steve Barnett, C.J. Rayburn and Kevin Claycomb rounded out the top five. Mike Jewell, Rick Corbin, Troy Green, Kris Patterson and Darrell Lanigan finished sixth through 10th, while Aukland -- debuting a Rayburn chassis -- finished 11th.

Barnett led the first 20 laps until Aukland, amid heavy lapped traffic, moved past Boggs and Barnett to take the lead. But Aukland's lead came to an end during a lap-31 caution when a trail of liquid coming off Aukland's car forced him to the infield, where his crew repaired the fuel line.

Aukland tried to rush back onto the track, but he was penalized for entering the track on the backstretch exit and was knocked out of contention. Boggs wasn't seriously challenged the rest of the way.

EASTABOGA, Ala. (Saturday) Marshall Green of Dalton, Ga., the 1995 Southern All-Stars champion, withstood a final charge from Danny People on the last of 50 laps to return to victory lane with a $3,000 series victory at Talladega Short Track.

Green took the lead from polesitter Greg Skinner on the seventh lap and held the lead the rest of the way to beat Peoples, Mark Miner, Rodney Dickson and Skinner. Red Farmer, Dean Garland, Ross Martin, Mike Head and James Cline finished sixth through 10th.

Peoples, debuting a new TNT chassis, nearly pulled off the victory on the last circuit. With the help of the slower car of Jeff Walker, Peoples slid underneath of Green's car coming out of Turn 4 for the checkered flag. Green's winning margin was estimated at less than a foot. "Danny and I talked after the race," Green said, "and we concluded that we never even touched even though we were side by side."
