(July 12, 2000) – Hooters ProCup Series action returns to the beautiful Virginia mountains on Saturday night July 22 when New River Valley Speedway hosts the Kroger 250 at 7 p.m. The track, known as Pulaski County Speedway until 1988, has given several Hooters ProCup Series drivers an opportunity to improve their driving skills and also collect a few honors to add to their racing resumes.

One such driver is Jon Wood. The Stuart, VA driver considers New River Valley his home track and looks forward to returning. He competed on it just one season ago in the Late Model Stock division.

"We are really looking forward to racing at New River in a Hooters ProCup Series race" said Wood. "It will be a chance to race on a track that I have some experience on and it is close enough for our family and friends to come out and watch a race in the stands."

Wood won Rookie of the Year honors in 1999, racing at the .416-mile facility and finished third in a Late Model Stock race back in June at the track. Wood also won the first Late Model Stock race of his career at New River Valley during his rookie campaign winning the New River Pontiac/GMC/-Nissan 200.

"We have a lot of track time out at New River," said Wood. "When we need to shake a car down or test some new equipment, we head to New River." The track is known for being a facility you can pass on despite its tight turns, Wood adds, and that should give the fans a great show. "The turns are really tight, like the turns at Ace Speedway where we raced back in April," said Wood. "But New River is a place where you can get a good run off of the turns and make the pass on the straight-aways. I am excited about running at New River and would love to get a win in front of our family and friends."

Several other Hooters ProCup Series drivers have also enjoyed success at New River Valley Speedway. Jeff Agnew, the 1998 Hooters ProCup Series champion, won track championships in 1991, 1992, and 1994. While veteran driver Jay Fogleman also has completed quite a few laps around the demanding track and won the first Hooters ProCup Series race at the track in 1998. Fogleman also finished second in last season’s Kroger 250.

The track features 560-foot long straight-aways and a racing width of 53 feet. While the turns are banked 15 degrees and the frontstretch and backstretch are both banked seven degrees, respectively.

Mario Gosselin, who currently holds the all-time Hooters ProCup Series record with 15 wins, won last season’s race and has remained in the top two in points standings virtually all season.
