USARacing Series, formerly the Hooters Pro Cup Series, will crown champion Saturday at SoBo

SOUTH BOSTON, VA. -- The last of four races in a championship series to crown the 2009 USARacing Pro Cup Series will be held Saturday afternoon at South Boston Speedway.

The champion in the series, which was formerly known as the Hooters Pro Cup Series, will be crowned at the conclusion of the Strutmasters.com 250. Also slated for racing action on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval Saturday afternoon will be the area's top Limited Sportsman Division competitors in a 100-lap shootout.

The first of the two races will get the green flag Saturday at 2 p.m. While the racing action will get cranked up at 2 p.m., there will be plenty of excitement offered for fans throughout the Halloween weekend event at America's Hometown Track.

Practice and qualifying for the USARacing Pro Cup Series will be held on Friday afternoon. Practice for the series will be held from noon until 2:30 p.m. and will be followed by qualifying time trials at 4:30 p.m.

Also scheduled on Friday will be the 2009 USARacing Pro Cup Series Pit Crew Competition, which will get underway at 5:30 p.m. Grandstands will be open Friday for the practice and qualifying sessions as well as the pit crew competition and no admission will be charged for those events.

On Saturday, a Halloween Costume Contest, which will pay $500 to the winner, will be held as part of the race day festivities and fans will be able to head trackside prior to the racing action for a Fan Appreciation Session. The Halloween Costume Contest will begin at 1:15 p.m. and will be preceded by the Fan Appreciation Session, which will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Grandstand gates will open Saturday at 11 a.m. and hayrides for all ages will be held from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Qualifying for the Limited Sportsman 100-lap race will be held on Saturday at noon, shortly after a practice session that will run from 10 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.

Two-time Pro Cup champion Clay Rogers heads into the championship event for the USARacing Pro Cup Series with a 43-point advantage over J.P. Morgan. Rogers won the championship in the former Hooters Pro Cup Series in 2004 and 2006.

Drew Herring, the 2006 South Boston Speedway Late Model Stock Car Division champion, sits third in the point standings, 85 points out of the lead and eight ahead of fourth-place Brandon Ward and 10 points ahead of fifth-place Bobby Gill.

"It's really Clay's deal to lose," Moore was quoted as saying this week. "He's got a pretty good cushion. If he gets any of the bonus points, that is one more spot I have to obtain."
