WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., (August 27, 2001) -- As the USAR ProCup Series Southern Division wraps up this weekend at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Fla., Hal Goodson and Scott Hall head into the event with different goals and strategies.
For Goodson, driver of the No. 45 Carlin Financial Chevrolet Monte Carlo, scoring a solid finish and building momentum heading into the Four Champions Challenge Series is critical.
"We've been off on the setup the past couple of races and need to get back on track and contend for the win this weekend in Lakeland," Goodson said. "If we can leave Lakeland with a victory or at least a strong finish, that will build momentum for the team heading into the five races that make up the Four Champions Challenge Series."
"We need to maintain our spot in the points and we still have a chance at heading into the Challenge Series as the Southern point leader if Bobby (Gill) has trouble this weekend," Goodson added. "The better we can position ourselves heading into the final five races, the better shot we have at scoring the national championship, which is our goal."
Goodson and his team will have a new consultant this weekend in Lakeland as car builder Jay Hedgecock will assist the team in the absence of former crew chief Colan Ingle, who has left the team to pursue new endeavors.
For Hall, the event at Lakeland marks his final appearance in the USAR ProCup Series for the 2001 season, as the No. 54 team prepares to compete full time in the Series in 2002.
"We've already run three races this season and this weekend's event at Lakeland will mark my fourth start," Hall said. "This weekend's race is the last race we are eligible to enter this year as our team prepares to run for Rookie of the Year honors next season in the USAR ProCup Series."
After a test at the south Florida track last week, Hall feels confident heading into the event. "We had a really good test down at Lakeland last week and everyone on this team feels like we're bringing a strong piece back with us for the race," Hall added. "My goal is run up front and complete all the laps."
USAR ProCup Series action at USA Int'l Speedway is set for this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. EST.
