PINKERTON, WOOD TAKE OPENING NIGHT WINS AT PRO-LINE BUILDINGS STOCK CAR SHOOTOUT

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (June 29, 2005) -- The first of two nights of racing action was held at the Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway Wednesday with the 10th Annual Pro-Line Buildings Stock Car Shootout featuring three classes in action. The USRA Modified division -- racing a regular points night for the USRA Casey's General Stores Championship Series -- joined the USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Stock Cars racing for big prize money and a nice trophy to add to the racing collection.

The first feature of the night saw the USRA Hobby Stocks take the green for 15 laps of exciting racing action. The early-race leader was Colt Mather of Keswick, who took the race lead and built a nice lead over the field before his machine started slowing with mechanical problems with only two laps to go.

Mather's lead was getting smaller each lap, and with the field racing off of turn 4 to the checkers, Nathan Wood of Sigourney worked the bottom of the Speedway with Mather in the middle and Steve Allen of Oskaloosa running the top side. The three drivers raced to the finish line with Wood taking the win followed by Allen in second and Ottumwa racer Mike Shelton racing from the tail after spinning on lap 1 to a third-place finish. Mather's machine hung on for the fourth-place finish.

In the second feature of the night, the USRA Modifieds took to the 1/2-mile oval with Ron VerBeek of Oskaloosa taking the early race lead. VerBeek led until lap 8 of the 15-lap event, trying several times to hang onto the top spot, but Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon took the lead. On the 13th lap, caution flew to set-up a green-white-checkered shootout. VanderBeek led the field on the restart and VerBeek tried the top side, but VanderBeek was too strong working the bottom and took the win. VerBeek took a hard-fought second, followed by Steve Stewart of Washington in third and fourth going to Mike Hughes of Rose Hill.

The final feature of the night was the main event that everybody came to see ... and we saved the best for last! On the start of the USRA Stock Car feature, Brian Mitrisin of Oskaloosa took the lead and led until lap 18 of the 20-lap event before Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon closed in. Pinkerton, who started in the 13th position, took the race lead off of turn 2 and piloted the familiar #17p machine to victory lane. Mitrisin took second, followed by veteran driver Jim Brown of Fremont taking the third spot. Eric Flanders of What Cheer was fourth.

The racing action was red-flagged for Ross McCombs, who climbed the outside guardrail and flipped several times down the front-straight, with the car bursting into flames coming to rest just before entering turn 1. Track workers and the fire crew quickly removed McCombs from the burning car. McCombs was able to walk away with out any problems, but his stock car received heavy damage.

Racing action will be held tomorrow (Thursday, June 30) for night #2 of the 10th Annual Pro-Line Buildings Stock Car Shootout, with $2,000 going to the winner in the USRA Stock Car division. The USRA Hobby Stock driver will walk away with $1,200.

Hot laps start at 7 p.m. and racing action goes green at 7:30. Also, fans are invited to come out and meet several drivers and get pictures along with autographs and cars on display from 6-7 p.m.

The Carriker Ford Southern Iowa Speedway continues to offer one of the most lucrative weekly payouts in the state of Iowa. In addition, USRA-licensed drivers compete against drivers from other USRA-sanctioned tracks for a share of the USRA Casey's General Stores Championship Series national points fund.
