Super DIRT Series kicks off tonight at Utica-Rome Speedway.

VERNON, NY -- The 2002 edition of the nationally acclaimed Turning Stone Casino 358-Modified Super DIRT Series and the Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series will begin tonight at Utica-Rome Speedway on Route 5 in Vernon.

Scheduled for the much-anticipated F.X. Caprara Car Companies program is a 100-lap grind for the 358-Modifieds and a 30-lap special for the Sportsman division. All eyes and hype are now focused back at Utica-Rome tonight for the new date to begin the fresh season of Super DIRT Series competition.

Expected to battle for a victory in the 100-lap, $3,000 to win Turning Stone Casino 358-Modified Super DIRT Series event are a host of invading DIRT teams including defending race winner Danny Johnson, Alan Johnson, Brett Hearn, Pat Ward, Steve Paine, Pete Bicknell, and Vic Coffey. Billy Decker, the winner of last year's Big Block Modified Super DIRT Series event at Utica-Rome, will also be debuting his brand new Randy Ross owned, Saranac sponsored, 358-Modified. Home track regulars including point leader and series regular Matt Sheppard, Mitch Gibbs, Todd Burley, Jack Johnson, Gordy Button, J.J. Michaels, and Ron Holmes will all be on hand to defend their home turf from the outsiders.

The Sportsman division will also be featured with a 30-lap, $1,000 to win Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Super DIRT Series event, offering a guaranteed starting spot for the Syracuse Mile "Firecracker" Sportsman Championship feature event. The top Sportsman drivers on the DIRT Circuit including Randy Chrysler, Stewart Friesen, Eldon Payne, and David VanHorn will all be in attendance. Top track regulars Jamie Christian, Paul Carey, Mike Button, and defending race winner Tim Clemons will lead the charge over the invaders.

Track points will not be awarded for either race, although track regulars who support the show will receive 25 bonus track points if they attempt to qualify. Super DIRT Series points will be on the line and drivers will be hungry to begin the year on a good note or even score a victory as every point is valuable in determining the season long Mr. DIRT Champion.

Gates for the special midweek F.X. Caprara Car Companies special show at Utica-Rome Speedway will open at 4pm with time trials at 6:30pm, and racing beginning at 7pm. The speedway is located on Route 5 in Vernon, just minutes off New York State Thruway Exit 33. For more information, contact the track office at (315) 829-4557 or visit www.uticaromespeedway.com.
