Utica-Rome Speedway Hires Dick Sweet as General Manager
VERNON, NY- In the first off-season move of the season at the Utica-Rome Speedway, Dick Sweet has been hired as the new General Manager of the Vernon oval. Sweet will take over the position that was left vacant by Chip Burdick who had left in the early summer months.
Sweet has been involved in all aspects of the local racing, as a driver, car owner, car builder, and as an official. As a car owner and driver, Sweet has won championships with Dick Schoonover and Brett Belden as well as himself. In the mid-80's, Sweet was hired as the flagger at the Eric Kingsley promoted Fulton Speedway and he quickly learned the trade and won the respect of the competitors. Sweet has worked at numerous speedways across the northeast including Brewerton, Fulton, Utica-Rome, Fonda, and Afton Speedway in his long career as a race official. Sweet also dabbled in race promoting as he successfully began the annual Spooktacular event at Afton Speedway. After working the 2003 season at his childhood home, Fonda Speedway, Sweet retired from racing and moved to Florida. In a short interview at Fulton Speedway on Victoria 200 weekend, track owner Gene Cole made the decision to hire Sweet, who he has known for years.
Utica-Rome Speedway is located on Route 5 in Vernon NY and operates weekly in the summer months on Sunday evenings. For more information on the off-season happenings at the speedway, log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com or call (315) 822-6336.
