PERRY GETS FIRST SOUTHERN ALL-STAR WIN OF SEASON: Jamie Perry of Ringgold, Ga., held off 1991 Southern All-Star champion Mike Head at Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway for his first series victory of the season. Perry, driving the No. P4, pocketed $3,000. There were 45 late models on hand. DOAR LEADS EVERY LAP FOR VICTORY AT HIBBING: Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., started on the pole and led the entire distance for a $2,300 victory at Hibbing (Minn.) Speedway on the first night of the 21st annual Labor Day Shootout. PROVENZANO GETS $5,000 VICTORY AT LaSALLE: John Provenzano of Somanauk, Ill., took the lead from polesitter Bryan Dunaway on the 33rd lap and held off Joe Izzo to win the second annual Kevin Roderick Memorial at LaSalle (Ill.) Speedway, a 50-lap victory worth $5,000. Running the extreme high side, Provenzano started outside the fifth row and picked off foes one by one. He was up to seventh by the 20th lap, then continued his assault, taking second place from Geoff Wilson on lap 32, then the lead from Dunaway a lap later. Jim Curry (13.350 seconds) was fast qualifier at the UMP-sanctioned race. FEATURE (50 laps): (1) John Provenzano, (2) Joe Izzo, (3) Garrett Slager, (4) Billy Drake (5) Bryan Dunaway, (6) Jim Curry.

McDOWELL MAINTAINS DOMINANCE AT DUCK RIVER: Dale McDowell of Rossville, Ga., won his fifth Southern All-Star race at Duck River Speedway in the series' sixth trip to the quarter-mile oval in Wheel, Tenn. Bo Shirley's second-place finish pulled him within four points (1,116-1,112) of series leader Roger Best, who finished 19th. McDowell took the lead from Jerry Ashley on the 41st lap and went on to his 28th career Southern All-Star victory, this one worth $3,000. Dale Ledlow led the first 35 laps until he was overtaken by Ashley, who fell all the way back to fifth after McDowell got past. All 17 cars running at the end were on the lead lap. Dewayne Wilson was fastest of 36 late models in time trials. WATSON, MITCHEM SPLIT SUPR DOUBLE FEATURES: Kenneth Mitchem and Donald Watson split Twin 25-lap Southern United Professional Racing features at Forest Hill (La.) Speedway. In the first race, Mitchem used a big motor on a track made tacky by a rain shower to pull away and defeat Butch Patton. In the inverted second feature, Watson started outside the front row and rode the high groove to victory, holding off low-running Ronnie Poche. Mitchem was eliminated by a crash in the second feature. FIRST FEATURE (25 laps): (1) Kenneth Mitchem, (2) Butch Patton, (3) Rusty Cummings, (4) Rob Litton, (5) Howard Willis, (6) Jason Ingalls, (7) Keith Craft, (8) Donald Watson, (9) Brent McGee, (10) Ronnie Warman. SECOND FEATURE (25 laps): (1) Donald Watson, (2) Ronnie Poche, (3) Ronny Adams, (4) John Lovas, (5) Jason Ingalls, (6) Brent McGee, (7) Eddie Taylor, (8) Rob Litton, (9) Butch Patton, (10) Ronnie Warman.

KASTLI SCORES DEERY BROTHERS VICTORY: Greg Kastli went from third to first on the ninth lap and held on for a IMCA-sanctioned Deery Brothers Summer Series victory at Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. Using the middle groove, Kastli unseated Chris Smyser for second place, then leader Boone McLaughlin on the ninth lap. Smyser, who led the first five laps, tucked behind Kastli to regain the second spot, where he finished. Series points leader Gary Webb cut down a tire on the 18th lap and rallied from the rear to finish 11th. There were 30 late models in the pits. FEATURE: (1) Greg Kastli, (2) Chris Smyser, (3) Boone McLaughlin, (4) Harry Walker, (5) Todd Cooney, (6) Mark Chalupa, (7) Jeff Aikey, (8) Dean Wagner, (9) Ted Pallister, (10) Kevin Cale, (11) Gary Webb.

STEVE EGERSDORF TRIUMPHS AT HIBBING, MINN.: Steve Egersdorf of Lake Elmo, Minn., pocketed $2,300 for a victory on the second day of the 21st annual Labor Day Shootout at Hibbing (Minn.) Speedway. Tom Nesbitt battled with polesitter Darrell Nelson for the lead early in the race, but fell out with a blown engine on the 11th lap.
