The ex-Formula 1 driver had a tough time in 2016, as he finished only 17th with a sole points finish in the season finale at Suzuka.

For 2017, the Japanese driver will switch teams to drive KCMG's sole car, replacing Yuichi Nakayama. He will also continue racing in the WEC alongside Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez.

Elsewhere, reigning champion team Inging has retained its line-up from 2016, with last year's champion Yuji Kunimoto partnering with 2015 winner Hiroaki Ishiura.

Meanwhile, Andre Lotterer, who switched from Audi to Porsche for the 2017 WEC, will return for his fifth season racing for Team Tom's, alongside Toyota WEC driver Kazuki Nakajima.

The other Toyota-powered teams see a host of changes, with Kondo Racing going for an all-rookie line-up comprising European F3 graduate Nick Cassidy and 2016 All-Japan F3 champion Kenta Yamashita.

The duo replace British drivers James Rossiter and William Buller, both having been dropped from the Japanese manufacturer's Super Formula roster.

Team Impul has retained Yuhi Sekiguchi, but has replaced Brazilian Joao Paulo de Oliveira with Brit Jann Mardenborough, who will also make his debut in the series.

Finally, Team LeMans sees the return of Kazuya Oshima after four years, since his last full-time commitment in Super Formula. He replaces Kobayashi in the team.

Oshima's teammate is yet to be announced, but Indian Narain Karthikeyan has also been dropped from the manufacturer's roster.
