Motorsport.com art director Eric Gilbert presents the photos that he actually uses as screen savers (and that he has actually shot, also). He presents those photos on his personal Facebook page and is now sharing them on Motorsport.com. Enjoy.
Super GT series, Sugo, Japan, 2012-07-29. Banzai!!!
According to Wikipedia (who needs a real dictionary anymore…), 'Banzai Charge' is considered as one method of Gyokusai (Japanese: 玉砕, literally "jade shards"; honorable suicide). It is a word used to describe the suicide attack, or the suicide before being captured by the enemy such as seppuku (Japanese: 切腹).
Hmmm… A concept pretty similar to what Joao Paulo de Oliveira used at the start of the Super GT race at Sugo, last Sunday. Jumping in front of pole sitter Daisuke Ito at the start, his maneuver might have worked but unfortunately for him, Satoshi Motoyama in the #23 Nissan had the same idea. And to make things worst, the fast approaching first corner combined with the fact that he had the inside line made it next to impossible for him stay on the inside and make the corner. At the end, his whole move really looked like a suicide attack. As much as Satoshi Motoyama didn't find it amusing, I bet that (eventual winner) Daisuke Ito was all smile at the back in his #6 Lexus.
This is how crazy things sometimes get in the Japanese Super GT series. In fact, I'm almost surprised that I had to wait four starts to get a crash shot. Not that I'm particularly proud of shooting crashes, but they are part of racing and a professional photographer must 'get' them, when they do happen.
