Chennai ITC: Ramaswamy beats Balu to title by six points

Ashish Ramaswamy annexed the 2018 Indian Touring Cars title in the final round of the MRF MMSC National Racing Championship in Chennai, despite the best efforts of Arjun Balu.

The Arka Motorsports driver started the season with a double win and consistently finished in the points thereafter, building a sizeable lead in the championship.

That meant that two podiums in the title decider - both second-place finishes - were enough to secure the championship, his first at a national level, by six points.

Balu, who drives for Race Concepts, missed the season opener but emerged as a serious championship challenger in no time, winning five of the seven races he contested - including both the races this weekend.

However, absence from the opening round proved too costly as he was unable to overhaul Ramasamy’s early lead.

He ended the season with 161 points compared to 167 for Ramaswamy.

Nikanth Ram finished third in the standings ahead of defending champion Arjun Narendran, who secured a podium in Race 1 yesterday was but handed a red-flag in today’s event.

Narendran banged wheels with Balu at turn 2 on the opening lap, with the contact pitching him into a spin. Since he required the assistance of marshals to continue, the stewards appropriately handed him a black flag.
