LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 25, 2000) - Johnny Miller hopes he can follow up a strong, top-five finish at Laguna Seca two weeks ago with another strong run this weekend as the BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series contests the penultimate round of the 2000 season at the Johnson Controls 100 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 29. The fact that the Trans-Am cars will use the infield "roval" section of the racetrack should help; Miller has never failed to qualify or race in the top five at any roval for the past three seasons. At the most recent roval race, at Texas Motor Speedway in August, Miller came within 0.523 seconds of putting his #64 Automationdirect.com / UPS / Cutler-Hammer / HITACHI Corvette in winner's circle after staging a knock-down, drag-out battle for the lead over the last 10 laps with Leighton Reese.
Miller, the 1996 Trans-Am Rookie of the Year and 1998 Most Improved Driver is in the midst of his most competitive season yet. He's scored two poles and a track record, led three times, finished second twice, and races into Las Vegas a strong third in owner's points, which award professionalism and presentation as well as ontrack performance. Miller also comes into Las Vegas sporting another of the wild graphics schemes for which he's famous, and with long-time major sponsor Automationdirect.com, the industrial control products online superstore. In addition, package delivery service giant UPS has come aboard as an associate sponsor, making a major contribution to the cause and seeing to it that Miller gets an 'on-time' delivery to the races. Joining those two are Hitachi and Cutler-Hammer. Cutler-Hammer, a division of Eaton Corporation, is a leader in the development and manufacturing of power distribution equipment, electrical control products, and advanced industrial automation solutions.
"Along with our starship graphics, Tim Hohmann at Automationdirect.com has pulled together all these great companies to back us as a "Federation," comments Miller. "We've banded together, and hope our combined efforts will yield a result greater than the sum of the parts. It's going to be a tall order to give them all a return they can be happy with, but we're ready. I've put a lot of effort into assembling my crew, and we've got a team of people that I am very proud of as well. We had the legs on everyone last race, so we're ready to bravely go where no Trans-Am team has ever gone!"
The 45-lap, 101.25-mile race around the 2.25-mile track is scheduled to take the green flag at 3:15 PST on Sunday afternoon, October 29. The live telecast on the Speedvision Network will begin at 6:00 pm Eastern, and be rebroadcast on Friday, November 3 at 12:00 pm, EST.
