Brabham to race Stadium Truck on the Gold Coast
Matt Brabham will compete in two Stadium Super Truck events in Australia this month, starting with this weekend’s Gold Coast 600 event.
The 21-year-old will follow up the Gold Coast event with the next round at Valvoline Raceway in Sydney, the very speedway where famous grandfather Sir Jack Brabham started his own career.
“I raced in Formula Ford on the Gold Coast in 2010, but this will be unique - especially being eyeball to eyeball with the fans on the third storey of the apartments that line the track!” Brabham said.
“Heading to Valvoline Raceway will be awesome. Grandad started his career at the Sydney Showground in Midget racing, so for the myPlates Stadium Super Trucks to be alongside the Ultimate Sprintcars will be a real thrill.”
The Stadium Trucks events in Australia have been set up to pit the United States of America against Australia, with the overseas imports taking on local stars like Paul Morris and Matt Mingay. While Brabham technically has dual citizenship, he says he’ll be Team Australia while down under.
“I’ve got a foot in both camps, but I think with plenty of my mates on the sidelines – many that haven’t seen me race before – I’ll be firmly in Team Australia,” said Brabham.
“I think if I don’t align with the Aussies then Paul Morris will come chasing me – that’s enough to scare anyone!”
Brabham made his Super Trucks debut in Toronto earlier this year, when we was given a last-minute call-up by series boss Robby Gordon.
“I was walking past in Toronto and Robby Gordon said ‘Matty - have you got your helmet here?’ and I was like… yep – and next thing you know I was flying through the air,” Brabham said.
“It is completely nuts. I’ve seen the Stadium Super Trucks do their thing countless times on street circuits as part of the Verizon IndyCar Series and it’s seriously cool, but facing those jumps from behind the wheel, they are triple the size they look from the outside.”
