Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week and Summer Sizzle Highlight USAC Racing Schedule

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 29, 1999 -- The United States Auto Club released racing schedules today for the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series and the MCI WorldCom Midget Car Series. One of the highlights on the 35-race Stoops Freightliner Series schedule is a new look for Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week. The six-race, all dirt miniseries will start and finish on live television and include a brief venture to the legendary Eldora Speedway in neighboring Ohio. In addition to sponsoring this event, Pennzoil also makes their debut in 1999 as the official motor oil of USAC. Including the Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week opener and closer, a total of six races are slated for national television on ESPN2. The wishes of Pennsylvania sprint car fans will be granted in September when the series returns to the state for the first time since 1996. A 30-lap event is scheduled for the half-mile dirt at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa. The 1999 national sprint car champion will not be able to live on dirt alone. Another one of the additions to the schedule is Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The half-mile paved oval is slated for a September date and it is one of 15 paved events for 1999. The Series sponsor Stoops Freightliner joins with the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway and the Eldora Speedway to sponsor "Border Wars V" in early May. The two-race dirt and pavement series may provide an early glimpse of the contenders for the national championship. There are two major highlights on the 34-race national midget schedule for 1999. The first is the addition of telecommunications giant MCI WorldCom as the title sponsor of the series which will be called the MCI WorldCom USAC Midget Car Series. The sponsorship also includes the USAC western and TQ midget car series. The second is the creation of "Summer Sizzle" at the 16th Street Speedway in Indianapolis. The five-evening event in July at the former ball park will feature the largest purse ever posted in the history of midget car racing. The winner is already guaranteed a $20,000 paycheck. A total of five events are scheduled for national television on ESPN2 and TNN including one of the crown jewels in the sport--the Copper World Classic. In addition to the Copper World Classic and "Summer Sizzle," several other key events remain on the schedule in 1999. Included among those are the historic Belleville Nationals in Kansas, the legendary "Hut Hundred" at the Terre Haute Action Track in Indiana and the traditional "Turkey Night Grand Prix at the new Irwindale Speedway in California. "We really worked hard this year to add diversity to both the sprint and midget schedules," said Jason Smith, the USAC Sprint and Midget Coordinator. "When you throw in television negotiations as well as talks with new tracks, it took us a bit longer than I had hoped, but the fans should enjoy one of the best schedules in recent history." The MCI WorldCom Midget Car Series opens this weekend with a special invitational event at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series opens the 1999 campaign at Eldora Speedway on March 27.
