2002 Golden "Hoosier Hundred" salutes Hulman-George Family

6-time winner Foyt endorses "Golden" Hoosier Hundred.

Six-time "Hoosier Hundred" winner A.J. Foyt of Houston, Tex. is looking forward to this year's Golden "Hoosier Hundred," announced yesterday, to be held Friday night, May 24, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The race will salute the great heritage of the Hulman-George Family and their tremendous contributions to the sport of auto racing.

The Six-R Racing Team, a group of Indianapolis businessmen and motorsports participants, has agreed to assist in the promotion of this year's race, continuing a great tradition begun in 1953 with the assistance of Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony Hulman and fostered by the intense interest of his grandson, Tony George, the current IMS President and the founder of the Indy Racing League.

"Having the 6R Racing bunch come in to help is going to be great," said Foyt from his Texas home. "I've asked Dennis Wood to help them with whatever they need. We've been doing this race for about 12 years now and it has been a lot of fun, but with all my racing I really don't have the time to devote to the race as I would like. I hope all the sponsors, racers, fans and advertisers who have helped us over the years will continue to support this race. We picked these guys at 6R because they are committed to racing and they want to do whatever it takes to keep the tradition going. Hey, I'm still a fan and I'll buy a pit pass to the Golden "Hoosier Hundred" May 24!"

Foyt won the prestigious race back-to-back in 1960-61, 1964-65 and 1968-69 but started 19 straight from 1957-1975. He also started the 1979 and 1981 races and in his 21 starts posted six wins, five seconds and three thirds. A.J.'s grandson, A.J. IV, made his initial USAC Silver Crown start in last year's Indiana State Fairgrounds race but retired from the race after 19 laps.

This year's race celebrates 50 years of tradition at the storied 1-mile dirt track. The inaugural "Hoosier Hundred" was held in 1953, won by Bob Sweikert, but Rex Mays also won a 100-mile AAA National Championship race there in 1946. In recent years, the "Hulman/Hoosier Hundred" has continued the great tradition of American dirt-track racing which this event so astutely represents.

Tickets for the third round of the 2002 USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series will be available at the Indiana State Fairgrounds ticket offices and $5 discount coupons will be available at all Indianapolis-area Kroger stores.
