PIERCE WINS "LITTLE 500 POLE"

Anderson, IN----.Aaron Pierce of Muncie, Ind. captured the pole starting position for Saturday night's 58th Payless "Little 500" Sprint car classic during qualifications at the Anderson Speedway Thursday. USAC's 2004 Silver Crown "Rookie of the Year" completed four laps around the 1/4-mile paved oval in 45.161 seconds to put his Sam Pierce Chevrolet Beast on the pole for the 500-lap race which gets the green flat at 8 pm Saturday night.

Pierce also turned in the fastest single qualifying lap of 11.222 seconds, just shy of Bentley Warren's 1995 track record of 11.018 seconds.

Joining Pierce on the front row for the 500-lapper are Shane Cottle of Kokomo, Ind. and Lee Boss of New London, Ohio. A total of 34 cars qualified during Thursday's time trials, with the "top-15" locked into Saturday's field. Final qualifying is slated Friday to finalize the remaining 18 positions.

The "provisional" lineup includes three former race winners: seven-time defending champ Eric Gordon, who will shoot for his sixth consecutive victory from starting position six; three-time winner Jeff Bloom, who qualified 15th; and two-time winner Bentley Warren, who qualified 26th. Nine "rookies" are currently in the field, including front-row starter Cottle.
