STENHOUSE TURNS IN CAREER BEST AT DuQUOIN
DuQUOIN, Ill. -- September 4, 2006 -- Ricky Stenhouse Jr. accomplished what he set out to do Sunday night at the Ted Horn 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. His goal was have a good clean race and finish towards the front. He did just that finishing 12th, a career best finish in only his fourth time behind the wheel of a USAC Silver Crown car.
The Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team came into DuQuoin hoping to build on Jerry Coons Jr.'s 5th place finish in the No. 199 car at Springfield. Coons was 2nd quick in the first practice session and Stenhouse was 12th quick in his first visit to the Magic Mile. When it came time to qualify, the track had slowed down but both drivers were able to record times good for top seven starts. Veteran Jerry Coons Jr. timed in 6th quick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. timed in 7th, a career best for the rookie. When the green flag dropped Coons worked to conserve fuel while Stenhouse worked to gain experience. On lap 18, Jerry Coons began to battle with Josh Wise for 5th place when the caution fell for another car in turn four. Coons spun in turn one and made contact with the wall ending his night. He would finish 27th. With Coons out of the race, the team focused on the young Olive Branch, Mississippi native. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. stuck to the plan, fell back to 14th but planned to save the car for the end. He did just that and in the final laps of the race got by Levi Jones and edged Aaron Pierce at the line to finish 12th.
BACK TO THE PAVEMENT
After three straight dirt races, the Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing team and USAC Silver Crown Series will return to the pavement on Sunday, September 17th at Iowa Speedway. The weekend begins with practice and qualifying on Saturday, September 18th. All three of USAC national divisions will compete during the weekend.
