FORD FOCUS NATIONALS SUNDAY AT ANDERSON; CALIFORNIA PAVEMENT "SPECIAL EVENT" AT BLYTHE; SWANSON, ROBERTSON TAKE FOCUS "TUNEUPS"
Midwest Ford Focus Champion James Robertson and Carolina point leader Tanner Swanson recorded respective feature victories in weekend Ford Focus series finales, serving as "tune-ups" for this Sunday's Ford Focus National Championship race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.
Ford Focus drivers and car entrants from across the country are expected to participate in Sunday's showcase with the Henry Ford Sweepstakes Trophy and a National championship the prize. The unique format includes qualifying, heat races, a pair of preliminary feature events and the 30-lap National Championship finale.
Robertson, of Indianapolis, Ind., led the final 15 laps to win Sunday's 30-lap Midwest/Indiana Ford Focus finale at Anderson in the Gregg Steele Racing/Lucas Oil Beast. The victory solidified his championship in the Midwest series. Chett Gehrke of Broken Arrow, Okla., led the first 15 laps and finished second at Anderson to lock up the Indiana title, while Jordan Pennington, Andy Nock and Casey Riggs rounded out the "top-five" at the checkered flag.
Swanson, of Kingsburg, Calif., piloted Tracy Trotter's Al American Driver Challenge/Calico coatings Beast to victory at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway, leading all 35 laps of the Carolina Series race presented by the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Swanson leads Michael Sboro by 30 points in the new series standings going into the October 27 series finale at Coastal Plains Raceway in Jacksonville, N.C. Kykle Bonsignore finished second at Hickory, followed by Sboro, Andre Villareal and Scott Hunter.
Sunday's Anderson event is the third for National Championship recognition. Robbie Ray won the 2005 title and Michael Faccinto won last year's championship.
This weekend's activity, which includes a special non-point California Pevement Series race at Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway in Blythe, Calif. Saturday, will bring the total number of Ford Focus events this season to a whopping 96, eclipsing last year's record of 82. Four additional Ford Focus races are listed on the 2007 calendar, which would bring the season total to an even 100!
