Kokomo added to 2003 Sprint, Midget calendar.

Kokomo (Ind.) Speedway, which has hosted 83 USAC races in the past five decades, will return to the calendar of USAC events in 2003, hosting both the National Sprint Car Series and National Midget Car Series. Mark Owsley, a former race organizer at Kokomo, has returned as the race organizer for the 2003 season.

The Sprint Car race, slated for Thursday night, July 23, expands Valvoline Indiana Sprint Week to what could be its busiest slate ever, while the Midget Car race, set for Sunday night, June 15, completes a dynamic week of Indiana racing for USAC fans, hot on the heels of back-to-back events at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.

The Sprint Car race will be round five of an eight-race Valvoline Indiana Sprint Week schedule, which also includes races at North Vernon, Gas City, Putnamville, Haubstadt, Lawrenceburg, Bloomington and Terre Haute. The Midget Car race follows Friday night's "Hut Hundred" Midget Car race at Terre Haute and Saturday night's "Sumar Classic" Weld Racing Silver Crown race at Terre Haute.

Last year's Valvoline Indiana Sprint Week was schedule for an eight-race campaign, but rain forced cancellation of the Kokomo finale.

Nobody could be happier for the schedule additions than Kokomo's own Tony Elliott, winner of eight of the past 14 USAC Sprint Car events at the storied 1/4-mile dirt track. Elliott also owns three USAC Midget victories at his "home" track.

The inaugural USAC race at Kokomo was a Midget Car race on July 28, 1956 won by Forrest Parker and subsequent USAC winners there have included the likes of Ken Schrader, Jack Hewitt, Mel Kenyon, Jimmy Davies, Rich Vogler, Pancho Carter, Bob Wente, Tom Bigelow, Cory Kruseman and all three of USAC's 2002 National Champions, J.J. Yeley, Dave Darland and Tracy Hines.
