Winchester, IN - Ryan Newman was hoping for repeat results at Winchester Speedway Sunday afternoon after capturing the USAC MCI WorldCom feature event, but the cards weren't going to be dealt that way. As was the case in the last outing for Newman in the USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series, a parts failure yielded a disappointing finish of 22nd.

After qualifying 3rd fastest, Newman went on to win his heat race after starting last. During the heat race, the fuel pump started to leak on his foot, but he managed to complete the race. Newman would change the fuel pump before the feature and start 4th. Although he thought the problem was cured, Ryan Newman's night ended when fuel pump problems plagued him again, dropping him to the end of the final rundown.

"We had a good car for the race. It's just unfortunate that something happened like that. We thought we had it solved by changing it, but we ended up shearing the shaft off the fuel pump, so that was it. Not even one lap complete. We go to Memphis this weekend looking to claim the Silver Crown championship. I'm looking forward to that and hopefully the problems don't follow," Newman explained.

Ryan Newman began racing quarter midgets at the incredibly young age of 4 1/2 years. With over 200 quarter midget victories and two Quarter Midget National Championships to his credit, Newman is a member of the Quarter Midget Hall of Fame.

Since graduating to midgets, Ryan has garnered Rookie of the Year awards on the AAMS, USAC National Midget and USAC Silver Crown series, as well as the 1993 AAMS National Championship.

Away from the track, Ryan is an interdisciplinary engineering student at Purdue University, where he is on track to graduate in May, 2000.

Ryan returns to action this weekend at the Memphis Motorsports Park as he looks to claim the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet points championship. This race will be broadcast LIVE on TNN at 3:30 PM EST. Newman is currently also 2nd in the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Car Series Standings, following Sunday's run at Winchester Speedway.
