East Wins "Hut Hundred"
"Vogler Classic" & "Night Before The 500" This Week

Bobby East of Brownsburg, Ind. recorded the most significant victory of his young USAC racing career Friday night at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, winning the 53rd Clabber Girl "Hut Hundred" at the 1/2-mile dirt track. The win extended his lead in the USAC National Midget Car Series, which continues this week with a pair of races in Indianapolis, Ind.

The "Vogler Classic" at the Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome Thursday night honors the memory of the late Rich and Don Vogler and concludes with "The Diversified Insurance Brokerage Group 100" 100-lap National feature event, presented by National City Bank. Practice starts at 4 pm and racing begins at 7:30 and also includes the Midwest Ford Focus Midgets and Kenyon Midgets. Rich Vogler won the last USAC National race at the track, a 500-lapper in 1989.

The 59th Coca Cola "Night Before the 500" Classic at Indianapolis Raceway Park is slated Saturday night, with a 50-lap feature on the .686-mile paved oval. Practice at IRP starts at 4:45 pm, followed by qualifying at 5:45 and racing at 7:50. Two 12-lap qualifying races precede the 50-lapper, which was won last year by Aaron Fike.

East led 86 of the 100 laps at Terre Haute but Davey Ray got by him on the white-flag lap! East regained the lead in turn one and was able to withstand Ray's challenge to score the historic victory. Ray finished second ahead of Aaron Fike, Josh Wise and Danny Stratton. Jerry Coons, Jr. won the pole in the 33-car field but Jon Stanbrough led the first three laps. Critter Malone led the next seven before Stratton led three. East took over on lap 14 and except for a brief time on lap 99, he was in command the rest of the way in his Steve Lewis ASE/Ford Beast/Pink Ford.

East will be out to protect his National lead in this week's two events. He leads Josh Wise by 48 points, with Ray another six in arrears.
