Next year's "Copper World Classic" at Phoenix, Ariz. will sport a new look, format and date, incorporating the Indy Racing Northern Light Series, USAC's Coors Light Silver Bullet Series and MCI WorldCom National/Western Midget Car Series and the SRL Supermodified Series. The event will take place March 17-18, 2001, a departure from the traditional February date. Since its debut in 1977, the "Copper World Classic" has produced some of America's most exciting motorsports competition, has involved a variety of different racing formulas, and has offered race fans several different formats showcasing the nation's finest open-wheel and stock car racing talent. This new "Copper World Classic" concept will be the first to offer race fans a comprehensive "Road to Indy" package in one gigantic open-wheel weekend. The "Copper World Classic" has become one of the nation's most popular motorsports events," said John Capels, USAC's President and CEO. "Phoenix International Raceway and the Indy Racing Northern Light Series have taken a step which will create an unprecedented open-wheel extravaganza, expanding the fan base and appeal of an already spectacular event. We look forward to the new format and the increased exposure which will result for our participants, especially the opportunities to showcase their talents on a high-profile stage. Our members plan for this financially-rewarding weekend with anticipation each year and the new date should provide for an exciting new change of pace for all involved." The "Copper World Classic" debuted in 1977 and USAC became involved with the MCI WorldCom Midget Car Series portion in 1987. The Coors Light Silver Bullet Series was added in 1989 and in 1998 Tony Stewart became the only driver to win both USAC segments of the event. This year's winners were Jason Leffler (Silver Bullet) and Stewart (Midget Cars). "The rich history of the "Copper World Classic," combined with the great racing tradition of Indy Cars at PIR, brings together the best of both worlds," said Robin Braig, PIR executive vice president and general manager. "We are dedicated to giving our guests and competitors the best possible racing experience. Combining these events into one big weekend demonstrates our commitment to the open-wheel enthusiast."
