Point Leaders Enjoy Mid-Season Pennzoil Bonuses

USAC series point leading drivers and car entrants will receive a total of $9,000 in mid-season cash bonuses from Pennzoil Corporation's Pacesetter Program as part of its commitment to grass roots and short track racing. Additional year-end Pennzoil Pacesetter cash awards will be distributed to USAC series champions at the January 18 USAC National Awards Dinner in Indianapolis, Ind.

Drivers realizing cash awards as mid-season point leaders based on standings tabulated August 6 are: Russ Gamester of Peru, Ind. (Coors Light Silver Bullet Series), Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. (Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car and WorldCom National Midget Car Series), Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif. (Western Sprint Car Series), Alex Harris of Simi Valley, Calif. (WorldCom Western Midget Car Series) and Walt Johnson of North Hollywood, Calif. (WorldCom TQ Midget Car Series).

Car entrant recipients include Gamester Racing of Peru, Ind. (Coors Light Silver Bullet Series), Don DeSalle of Anderson, Ind. (Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series), Steve Lewis of Laguna Beach, Calif.( WorldCom National Midget Car Series), Lori Scott of Paradise, Calif. (Western Sprint Car Series), Orville Harris of Simi Valley, Calif. (WorldCom Western Midget Car Series) and Guy Barber of Camarillo, Calif. (WorldCom TQ Midget Car Series).

Gamester won back-to-back races at Irwindale, Calif. and Nazareth, Pa. and has seconds at IRP and Richmond, Va. to his credit to lead Paul White by 36 points, while Darland won the recent Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week championship with a race victory at Lawrenceburg, Ind. and also has victories in Midget car races at Rossburg, Ohio, Kansas City, Kans. and Belleville, Kans. Darland leads Jay Drake by 60 points in the Stoops Freightliner standings and 28 in the WorldCom National Midget Car points.

Hunt has a six-point Western Sprint Car lead over Jeff Gardner after a victory at Dodge City, Kans. and three seconds. Harris continues to seek his initial WorldCom Western Midget Car win of 2001 but four seconds have him leading Danny Ebberts by 11 points. Walt Johnson enjoys a 46 point lead over Steve Lambert after four seconds and a third in just five WorldCom TQ Midget starts!
