The Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered By Mazda took an interesting turn during their three-race weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Race One

The first race was run on Friday with series points leader Florian Latorre on pole alongside RC Enerson. Enerson had been on a slide with four finishes in the last five races outside of the top five, but was able to pull ahead of Latorre to win the first race of the weekend, leading every lap but not securing the bonus point for fastest lap.

Second in the points was Jake Eidson, who could only manage a fourth place finish behind Peter Portante while Henrik Furuseth rounded out the top five.

Race Two

The second race was not as forgiving for Enerson as he was a victim of contact with the 17 of Victor Franzoni after a race run in wet conditions.  Enerson and Franzoni made contact while fighting for the lead on the last lap, the former finishing 8th while the latter finished 14th after a 30 second penalty was assessed for his role in the collision.

The surprise winner was Eidson over Aaron Telitz and Furuseth finished off the podium.  Latorre finished fourth while Nico Jamin was fifth.

Race Three

The final race saw a third different winner as Latorre was able to pull away at the start and was never under threat as he led every lap and picked up fastest lap honors to maximize his race three points. Latorre was victorious over Peter Portante and Enerson on the podium.  Fourth went to Daniel Burkett while Franzoni was fifth and Eidson was eighth.

While Latorre may have lengthened his lead in the championship thanks to his remarkable consistency, this championship is by no means over.  Latorre leads Eidson and Enerson in the points championship with 277 points, 247 points and 244 points respectively.  Even with two races left, anything can happen to spoil the top three’s championship hopes.

The series will next race at Sonoma Raceway in conjunction with the rest of the Mazda Road to Indy and the Verizon IndyCar Series on August 23rd and 24th.
