TOURING: Chris Delfsma Winton preview

THE WAIT FOR ROOKIE IS OVER

Trackwise this year, it has been a quiet one for Hazelbrook realtor Chris Delfsma, but that is all about to change this weekend at Winton Raceway in rural Victorian when he takes part in the third round of the Shannons V8 Touring Car National Series.

Since racing a Ford Falcon GT in the Bathurst 12 Production Car race with Jeremy Gray in February, Delfsma has been putting together the ingredients, critical to being competitive in his newly chosen category V8 Touring Cars - a category for former V8 Supercars with minor changes to curtail costs and prolong the mechanical life of the cars.

"Getting into the V8s is simply not a matter of buying a car and going racing," he said. "You have to recruit a team around you -- an engineer and a data expert are a must."

The car is an ex Development Series Ford Falcon AU he purchased from Howard Racing which has been prepared by fellow V8 Touring Car competitor and new team mate John Vergotis while Delfsma has been tutored in the finer art of driving these types of vehicles by racing and touring car legend, and mentor John Bowe.

"The car has been meticulously prepared by John over the last few months and will roll onto the track in as good as new condition. Warren Davies and Andrew Simpson from Howard's will join the team for this event to ensure things get off on the right foot," Delfsma said.

"With Garry Mennell onboard the team as well - and great support from Aaron McGill - I feel very lucky to have experienced guys supporting me in what will no doubt be a big step in my motorsport career. Unfortunately JB (Bowe) can't make it this weekend."

Delfsma competed in his fourth Bathurst 12 Hour earlier in 2010 and has had a class win and ninth outright in his initial campaign of 2007, teamed with Bowe and Jack Elsegood in Delfsma's Century 21 Falcon XR8.

He enlisted Bowe and Paul Stubber in same car the following year, and last year joined Wilson Brothers Racing in one of their team of three Subaru Impreza WRXs. Delfsma won his class in the Australian v8tc copy Manufacturers Championship of 2008 and was runner up last year.

"This will be my first race meet in a V8 Supercar. I am looking forward to getting in a car again as I have not raced since the Bathurst 12 Hour but I fell motivated and refreshed after a few months away from racing. Due to work commitments I have been unable to complete the amount of testing I would have liked so race meeting will really more about learning rather than results," Delfsma concluded.
