TeamVodafone quickest in AGP qualifying
TeamVodafone's V8 Supercars have again shown great pace with Craig Lowndes topping today's qualifying session at the Australian Grand Prix while teammate Jamie Whincup was fastest in practice. After recording the fourth quickest time in practice, Lowndes went on to set a V8 Supercar qualifying and practice record at Albert Park with a time of 1.57.5723.
While the final grid positions won't be determined until after tomorrows top ten shootout the three-time V8 Supercar Champion acknowledged it was a good turnaround from Adelaide.
"It's nice to bounce back after Adelaide, I didn't have the best start to the championship so it is good to kick this event off on a positive note," Lowndes said.
"We still have the shootout tomorrow, but this is definitely a good start and gives the whole team great confidence ahead of Hamilton."The car is good but there is definitely still more left in it. Being a new model we are still learning what works and what doesnt so we continue to fine tune it every session," Lowndes explained.
Despite topping practice, Jamie Whincup's luck ran out at the start of qualifying when his TeamVodafone V8 Supercar experienced an engine problem and he was forced into the pits.
Whincup, who was only able to complete one timed lap, ended the session 19th but won't know his final grid position until after tomorrow's top ten shootout. The format for the Sprint Gas Manufacturers Challenge at the Australian Grand Prix sees the Ford and Holden V8 Supercars each line up on one side of the grid with the highest placed driver determining which manufacturer takes which side.
"I am a bit disappointed that I didn't finish today further up the order given our practice result but thankfully we have had the problem at this event and not at a championship round," Whincup explained.
"Today was still very encouraging with Craig quickest in qualifying. Hopefully he will get pole tomorrow which will see me start off grid position 15. "The good thing about this format is that it does allow me to improve my starting position for each race," he concluded.
Tomorrow's top ten shootout will be held at 3.10pm (AEDST) with the first of three 15-lap races to get underway at 6.15pm (AEDST).
