Albert Park V8s: Whincup hits back in Race 3

It was another Triple Eight 1-2-3 as the V8 Supercars action continued at the Australian Grand Prix, but this time it was Jamie Whincup who led the way.

It was almost a carbon copy of yesterday’s race, although with the positions switched around. This time it was Whincup who skipped off into the distance, while Shane van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes were left to scrap over second and third.

Like van Gisbergen yesterday, Whincup’s break came at the beginning of the third lap of the race. With the other two T8 cars locked in battle, Whincup – who took the lead from pole-sitter van Gisbergen a lap earlier at Turn 3 – built his winning gap.

And with the battle behind him continuing to rage until the chequered flag, all Whincup had to manage was the greasy track on his way to his first win of the weekend.

Race 1 and 2 winner van Gisbergen did manage to hold on for second, but Lowndes pushed him the whole way to the finish, making it another all-T8 grandstand finish.

Garth Tander was fourth for the Holden Racing Team, a brilliant start from P6 setting up his race. He wasn’t quite quick enough to run with the Triple Eight cars, but was comfortably quick enough to pull away from the pack behind.

That pack behind was a four-way battle over fifth place, staged between Fabian Coulthard, Chaz Mostert, James Courtney, and Michael Caruso, which finished in that order.

Scott McLaughlin had been in the midst of that battle as well, running seventh between Coulthard and Mostert for the first half of the race. But the Kiwi went flying off the circuit at Turn 13 six laps in, and never got back on track.
