Although many people had their eyes on Jamie Whincup as he cut through the field after starting from the back, his Ford counterpart, David Reynolds, had been able to replicate this stunt as well. The Ford Performance Racing (FPR) cars have shown incredible pace throughout the day with both Reynolds and Mark Winterbottom maintaining steady positions towards the front.

Reynolds' Bathurst hopes die with his car

On a safety car lap, the #55 had an electrical issue which caused the car to lose power. It was a huge upset for the Bottle-O Racing Team which brought tears to the eyes of co-driver, Dean Canto, after their incredible progress to this point.

Volvo on the chopping block

Another huge upset was the #33 Volvo if Scott McLaughlin as he got sideway coming out of The Cutting. He was immediately apologizing and taking full responsibility. McLaughlin was jumped by Shane van Gisbergen going into The Cutting which sent the Volvo driver onto the dirty racing line. No contact was made between the two New Zealanders.

Safety cars benefitting Red Bull

The #47 Supercheap Auto Holden Commodore driven by Tim Slade crashed going into The Cutting which brought out a game changing safety car. Jamie Whincup, who was able to muster the #1 Red Bull Commodore back onto the lead lap, will now be able to use its incredible speed to work through a compressed field. With a second safety car coming out after the #34 Volvo hit the wall, however, Whincup’s teammate, Paul Dumbrell, has yet to complete his minimum required laps. This will keep Dumbrell in the car for another fuel run.

Lowndes on the move

After a few dismal pit stops, car #888 driver, Craig Lowndes, who is celebrating his 20th Bathurst start, is on the move. The above mentioned safety cars also allowed Lowndes to catch up to the pack and he’s been on a run ever since. Lowndes has certainly found his race pace as he set the new race lap record with a 2:07.768 and currently holds the lead.

Moffat making a comeback

Despite the fact that the #360 Norton Nissan went into the wall twice, James Moffat is mounting a stellar comeback. With a clean and consistent run, Moffat and his team have done what some would consider to be impossible given the fact that he’s driving a wounded car. Moffat is currently in sixth.

The final run

As we approach the final stage of the Bathurst 1000, most of the co-drivers have completed their required laps and have effectively handed the keys over to the primary drivers for the remainder of the race. The current top-five is Craig Lowndes, Fabian Coulthard, Chaz Mostert, Shane van Gisbergen and Nick Percat as of Lap 120. The defending Bathurst champion, Mark Winterbottom, currently sits in seventh.
