CAMS clarifies Alex Rullo Superlicence dispensation

CAMS announced late last year that it would introduce a Superlicence system to Supercars for the 2017 season, to ensure all new drivers coming into the series were adequately prepared for top-level, professional motorsport.

The two major requirements to qualify for the Superlicence were being at least 17 years of age, and having accumulated a minimum of 13 points across the last five seasons.

However, LD Motorsport announced today that it has signed teenager Alex Rullo for the 2017 Supercars season – despite Rullo only being 16 years old, and having scored just five Superlicence points in his two full seasons of circuit racing (four for second in the Kumho Series in 2015, and one for 17th in the Dunlop Series last year).

With Rullo failing both of the major requirements for a Superlicence, CAMS has moved to clarify its decision to give Rullo a dispensation with an official statement.

CAMS allowed Alex Rullo a Superlicence dispensation based on the the following conditions:

1. The CAMS Superlicence is granted to Alex on a provisional basis until he turns 17 on 15 June 2017 (the provisional period).

2. The status of Alex’s Superlicence will be reviewed after each round of the [Supercars] championship during the provisional period. This review will determine whether Alex qualifies for his Superlicence to be continued on a provisional basis for the next round of the championship.

3. At the conclusion of the provisional period, CAMS will determine;
a. Whether Alex has suitably demonstrated that he qualifies for a Superlicence for the remainder of the championship.
b. Whether the Superlicence continue to be granted on a provisional round by round basis.
c. Whether the Superlicence should be withdrawn altogether.

4. Alex’s driving conduct will be monitored by CAMS and Supercars officials during this provisional period.

Rullo will take over from Paul Dumbrell – brother of LD Motorsport owner Lucas Dumbrell – as the youngest Supercars driver in history when he debuts at the Clipsal 500.
