Coulthard, who qualified seventh in the Top Ten Shoot-Out, made a great start to run fifth by the end of the first lap and then inherited two spots as Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes battled on lap 14.

He stayed in effective third for the remainder of the 250km race before Shane Van Gisbergen put him in the fence on the penultimate lap. Coulthard limped home in 19th.

Qualifying for the last race of the season will begin tomorrow at 12.40

Fabian Coulthard - Lockwood Racing: "What's done is done. I can't change anything. I'm pissed off, annoyed, all of the above. You just can't put it into words.

"In the drivers' briefing we were told that if you're going to have a look at that point of the track you need to be at the front wheel of the car you're passing. He was not even anywhere near. It felt like he came from about three car lengths back and if I wasn't there he would have ended in the fence so it will be interesting to see what the officials do.

"If it wasn't for that we could have easily held him off. We'd gapped him and he was making mistakes left, right and centre."
