Lowndes is in his second year running a third Triple Eight entry, having moved out of the Red Bull-backed fold when Shane van Gisbergen joined the team for the 2016 season.

That deal now looks set to run for at least another two years, Lowndes making a fresh commitment to a full-time drive that will cover 2018 and 2019.

“I’m really happy to be staying with Triple Eight for at least another two years,” said Lowndes.

“I’ve been here a long time now and we’ve enjoyed a great amount of success together over the years.

“I’ve always said that if I’m still motivated and I’m still competitive, then I’ll keep going. We finished fourth in the championship last year and I’m enjoying racing as much as I ever have, so it was a no-brainer for me to continue.

“Staying on with Triple Eight was always my first choice, so it’s a great feeling for the rest of this year knowing that I’m going to be continuing where I am for the foreseeable future.”

Triple Eight boss Roland Dane echoed Lowndes’s thoughts over a new deal being a no-brainer.

“We’ve achieved an awful lot during his time with Triple Eight and we aim to continue building on that into the future with more race wins and of course another Bathurst win,” said Dane.

“There was never a question mark for me over whether we wanted Craig to stay with the team and I’m pleased we’ve been able to confirm the extension relatively early in the season.”

Lowndes first joined the Triple Eight squad back in 2005, and while he hasn’t added to his three titles in that time he has also never finished outside the top four in the points. He’s also added five Bathurst 1000 wins to his tally in Triple Eight colours, most recently in 2015 alongside Steve Richards.

Last year he finished fourth in the points, behind the two Red Bull Triple Eight entries of van Gisbergen and Whincup, and then-Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin.

The 2017 season hasn’t started quite as quickly for Lowndes, though, the Vortex-backed driver currently sitting eighth in the points. He did put in a storming drive last time out in Perth, though, bouncing back from a poor qualifying performance and a technical problem on the warm-up lap to go from last to eighth.
