Davison was a massive 0.453s clear of the field, setting an impressive 1m13.025s after switching to the soft Dunlop tyre for a one-lap sprint in the closing seconds of the session.

Andre Heimgartner and James Courtney squabbled over second throughout the last three minutes of the session, trading best times on the soft tyre lap-for-lap. In the end, it was the young Kiwi that got the job done, taking P2 with a 1m13.478s and relegating Courtney to P3.

Scott McLaughlin continued his promising start to the weekend with P4, while Ash Walsh capped off an impressive session for Erebus with the fifth fastest time.

Jason Bright, meanwhile, was the best of those who set their best time on the harder compound tyre, going sixth fastest for Brad Jones Racing.

Todd Kelly was the best Nissan in P9.

Triple Eight was outside the Top 10 again, with Jamie Whincup 12th and Craig Lowndes 13th, while Prodrive Racing Australia’s two major title contenders Chaz Mostert and Mark Winterbottom were just 17th and 18th respectively, having sat right at the top mid-way through the 30-minute session.

Shane van Gisbergen failed to set a time in FP2, the vibration issue from FP1 continuing to hamper the Kiwi. After trying to solve the problem early in the session, the Tekno Autosports crew instead decided to park the car for the session and change the transaxle ahead of FP3.

“It’s undriveable, it makes you feel sick,” van Gisbergen said.

“We have to replace the whole driveline. It makes it hard now, the next session for us is critical. [The car] feels good, it’s obviously fast, we just need to get the mechanicals right.”
